  • Nalapat Balamani Amma was a well-known Indian poet and prolific writer well recognized for her Malayalam compositions. She was dubbed the “poetess of motherhood.” She didn’t go to school. Her maternal uncle’s writings aided her, and the poet Vallathol Narayana Menon encouraged her.
  • She was gifted with literary abilities. Her work has appeared in over twenty collections of poems, translations, & prose. She began composing poems at an early age. Her debut poem, “Kooppukai,” was published in 1930.
  • She rose to prominence and became well-known after receiving the ‘Sahithya Nipuna Puraskaram’ award from Parikshith Thampuran, the previous monarch of the Kingdom of Cochin.

Balamani Amma Awards and Achievements

Her Malayalam poems about the love for children and grandkids earned her the labels Amma (mother) and Muthassi (grandmother). Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, who delivered the Balamaniyamma memorial address at the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, characterised her as a “prophet of human greatness” and claimed her poetry had inspired him.

Many literary honours and awards have been bestowed upon her, including the Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award for Muthassi (1963), the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award for Muthassi (1965), the Asan Prize (1989), the Vallathol Award (1993), the Lalithambika Antharjanam Award (1993), the Saraswati Samman for Nivedyam (1995), the Ezhuthachan Award (1995), and the N. V. (1997). In 1987, she was also awarded India’s third highest civilian honour, the Padma Bhushan.

Balamani Amma published more than 20 poetry anthologies, several prose works, & translations. In 1930, her debut poem, “Kooppukai,” was published. Her first acclaim came when she was awarded the Sahithya Nipuna Puraskaram by Parikshith Thampuran, the former ruler of the Kingdom of Cochin. Nivedyam is a collection of Balamani Amma’s poems written between 1959 and 1986. Lokantharangalil is an elegy written in response to the death of poet Nalapat Narayana Menon.
