Attempting to break Tanya Streeter’s no-limits freediving world record of 160 meters, set on October 17 of that year, resulted in Mestre’s untimely death.
On October 4, 2002, Audrey and a diving group led by her husband dove off Bayahibe Beach in the Dominican Republic and dove to a depth of 166 meters for a practice dive.
After further deep dives, on October 12, she intended to make a dive to 171 meters.
As she got closer to 171 meters, she realized she had run out of oxygen. Her husband eventually suited up in diving gear, dove down, and hauled her back up, but it was too late.
A shore hospital, unfortunately, confirmed Audrey Mestre’s death.
Since the setup did not adhere to some freediving safety requirements, the dive was difficult and received heavy criticism.

After that, in February of 1996, she finally met Pippin at a freediving world record attempt he had planned in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California, Mexico.
There, Audrey began studying under Pipin and had the opportunity to speak with him to establish a connection with him. She and the guy engage in a lengthy discussion. Afterward, Pipin extended an invitation to go scuba diving with him. Later, Pipin was astonished by Audrey’s diving abilities.

Audrey Mestre Professional Career
A native of Saint-Denis, Seine-Saint-Denis, she learned to swim at age two and was an accomplished scuba diver by the time she was thirteen. In 1996, she met the world-famous freediver Francisco “Pipn” Ferreras through her passion for scuba diving. They began dating right away, and shortly after, Mestre relocated to Miami, Florida, to be with Ferreras.
There she began freediving seriously, and with Ferreras as her coach, she quickly began setting depth records.
The diving enthusiasts wed in 1999, and the following year, Audrey Mestre set a new world record for women by free diving to a depth of 125 meters (410 feet) off the coast of Fort Lauderdale. After a year, she surpassed her previous depth record of 100 meters by diving to 130 meters (427 ft).
In 2002, on October 4, with her husband leading a dive team “‘s the watchful eye, she did a practice dive to a record-breaking depth of 166 meters off Bayahibe Beach in the Dominican Republic (545 ft). Eight days later, after several training dives, she attempted a dive to 171 meters but ran into trouble with the lift balloon on the way up.
She stayed below for about eight and a half minutes on a dive that was only supposed to take three.
