The second season of the FXX comedy You’re the Worst has been hailed by critics everywhere and praised for its serious and honest portrayal of depression. FX recently granted the romantic comedy, which follows Jimmy (Chris Geere) and Gretchen (Aya Cash) and sees its second season conclude this Wednesday at 10:30 p.m., a third season to premiere in the summer of 2016.
While he has no definitive plans of what the show will tackle in Season 3, series’ creator and executive producer Stephen Falk said it likely won’t be a repeat of what they’ve already done. “If we tried to recreate what we did in Season 1 in Season 2, it would’ve been problematic,” he told reporters on a recent conference call. “We would’ve had a certain segment of the audience who is just very happy to just let Jimmy and Gretchen have fun and watch their weird antics, but instead we challenged ourselves,” Falk recalled about this season’s take on Gretchen’s struggle with depression.
“Similarly, if we tried to do something equally dark and potentially issue-y like tackle depression, if we did that in Season 3 I think we would risk repeating ourselves and it would also feel creatively suspect,” Falk said. So just what does he and the writers have in store for Season 3? Well, he’s not exactly sure yet, “I don’t know exactly. I’m excited to get back into the writers’ room in January and find out.”
Falk did make sure to mention some very important lessons he took away from Season 2. “I think we learned a lot about what the network has tolerance for and what the audience has an appetite and intellectual capacity for. I certainly learned, even though I knew, how I could stretch the actors and the writers in different, surprising directions,” he said. That leaves him feeling pretty good about Season 3 because “the landscape is wide open and I’m very, very excited to see what we come up with.
So would that landscape include a musical episode of You’re the Worst? It’s something Aya Cash hinted that she’d like to see in the show’s future, but for now, Falk said he’s “not promising anything.” However, he did admit that a musical would be a way of making next season’s Sunday Funday episode special, should they choose to do another. “I had a similar thought, that if we were to do Sunday Funday again it would have to be something very different and something very exciting to tackle,” he explained.
But before a musical episode would ever happen, there are a few requirements that Falk would need to be met and one is that it isn’t some last ditch creative effort for the show to remain relevant. “I’d love to get more musical elements there without feeling like late season desperation or boredom, which I think it can for certain shows–not that it was desperation for Buffy or Scrubs–but there’s numerous examples of shows that were in their twilight and they were like ‘Fuck it, let’s do a musical.’ I’d have to feel internally that it wasn’t feeling like that,” he explained.
