Younger: What You Need To Know Before the Season 2 Premiere

While we’re all recovering from all those holiday shenanigans, most of our favorite shows are finally returning from their winter breaks. If one of those, TV Land’s Younger, was not in your life in 2015, I’m here to tell you that quickly needs to change for the New Year–and we’re here to help you with that.

The show stars Sutton Foster (Bunheads) as Liza Miller, a 40-year-old woman pretending to be 26 in order to return to her career in publishing, no small feat for this divorcée from New Jersey. Along the way, Liza gets help from her friend Maggie (Debi Mazar), an artist living in Brooklyn, while her daughter Caitlin (Tessa Albertson), is studying abroad in India unaware of her mother’s new life–one which includes partying in Manhattan and becoming friends with Kelsey (Hilary Duff), a twentysomething editor.

Liza’s Love Life

Liza’s living a lie, one that only grows bigger when she starts dating Josh (Nico Tortorella), a twentysomething tattoo artist. Josh eventually sees that some things are a bit off with Liza, but he chalks them all up to Liza being quirky. However, things get complicated when she falls for Josh. She endures his loud roommates and his adventures in street dodge ball, but the layers of her secret begin to show. Josh doesn’t think there’s anything wrong, even going as far as getting a dragon tattooed on his arm for her “birth year,”–which ssshhh, is really the year of the tiger!

Climbing the corporate ladder

Back at work, Liza has to contend with Diana Trout (Miriam Shor), her boss and the head of marketing. Diana is a 43-year-old divorced career woman–very similar to the real Liza. She doesn’t like anyone who is younger than her, but she sees that there’s something about Liza that is different–although she would never admit that. Behind her stoic persona, Diana does seem to care about mentoring her younger co-workers and assistants.

The truth comes out

Towards the end of the season, while out at a friend’s party, Liza and Josh say that they love each other, forcing Liza to finally tell Josh the truth. They split up soon after, leaving Liza with her secret slowly unwinding. With Josh knowing (and keeping) her secret, Liza thinks everything is under control, that is until she sees someone that she worked with 14 years ago having lunch with Diana. The woman finds out her secret, but with a little blackmail, it goes back into hiding. The stress of her secret is weighing down on her with the hopes that her work can make people overlook it when it finally is revealed.

What happens next?

The season ends with Josh and Liza restarting their relationship. They reintroduce themselves to each other–this time as who they really are. But Caitlin is coming home to live with Maggie and Liza in Brooklyn, which will only make Liza’s lie grow even bigger. Liza continues to go to work as an assistant to Diana, but how long can her secret really last? That’ll be the question at hand when Season 2 starts again.
