Despite what many were feeling after learning about the man that was Robert Svane, make no mistake, Bobo Del Rey (Michael Eklund) is still plenty down for causing trouble on Wynonna Earp. Viewers finally got to see more of him in last Friday’s episode where he broke the third seal for Widows Beth (Meghan Heffern) and Mercedes (Dani Kind), seemingly opening the door to raise Demon Clootie in the series’ Season 2 finale this week. Bobo broke the seal after being promised that he would not get sent back to Hell again.
It was also clear, even in the alternate reality, that Bobo still held his special connection to Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkey). Whether or not more will be revealed about that connection, as well as why Bobo was the only revenant to return when Wynonna died, albeit briefly, earlier this season remains to be seen. To get a closer look at what it was like filming Bobo’s scenes in that mental hospital, as well what lies ahead for him in the finale, The TV Junkies spoke exclusively with Eklund. He also stars as Martin on BBC America’s Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency and previewed what’s to come in Season 2.
TTVJ: Even when in a sort of alternate reality, Waverly and Bobo still have a connection. We got more fantastic scenes between you and Dominique. What was it like filming in that padded cell and being in that straight jacked?
ME: They write so well for Bobo and Waverly because of the relationship they have. I have to give credit to the writing first of all, and the scenes they write for the two of us are so strong, powerful and give us so much to work for. Then I have to give credit to Dominique because she’s so good and what she brings to those scenes is so strong. You put all that together and what comes out, comes out. We don’t know and are always surprised they come out so interesting.
I remember I was shooting a movie at the same time as that episode of Wynonna Earp. I was shooting two hours away on a film with Liam Neeson. I shot that movie all night until 5 a.m. It was 12 hours on set on the film, they rushed me to set and shot those scenes with Dominique all day. It was no sleep that whole day. I loved that I was so tired and wiped out from shooting, rushing to set and shooting those scenes, that I just used that euphoric, lucid, dreaming state to shoot those scenes. I was really excited to see what would come out, and both Dominique and I were really proud of those. Because Bobo was so drugged up and I was so tired in my own life, I think it just kind of worked. I remember those being some of the most fun scenes.
TTVJ: Bobo broke the third seal for the Widows so that he doesn’t have to go back to Hell again. Can you preview what he and the Widows are up to in the finale?
ME: All I can say is never trust those Widows. You can’t trust them! Never trust Bobo. Don’t trust anyone! They all have their own motive of what’s going on. You put all the characters together that you can’t trust in one episode to see who’s going to come out on top. That’s all I can say.
TTVJ: We still don’t know why Bobo came back when Wynonna died for those 77 seconds. What can you say about that and the reason for his return?
ME: Revenants do resurrect once the heir dies so I thought it was a clever way of bringing back Bobo. I didn’t know how they were going to pull that off or do it. I can’t really answer why he’s the only one.
TTVJ: You’re headed to Dragon Con with the Wynonna Earp cast at the end of the season. Have you done fan conventions before and are you excited to meet Earpers?
ME: Dragon Con is my first convention ever. I’ve never done a convention in my life. I’m very excited. There’s no reason I haven’t done them before, I just haven’t opened to that world before and was always working. This time I thought it was important to take the time off to meet the supporters and fans of Wynonna Earp. I am very excited to come and give the love back to everyone. I’m very excited and don’t know what to expect, but want to meet the fans that allow this show to exist. It’s because of them that we even have a show. If there aren’t people enjoying it then there’s no world to create. It’s all because of the people watching so I just thought it was important to take the moment and say “thank you” for once.
TTVJ: You are also on Dirk Gently which will be returning soon. What can you share about Season 2?
ME: We are currently shooting Season 2 at the moment and about to start the last two episodes. If you enjoyed the first season then get ready for Season 2. If you thought Season 1 was weird and wacky, then you haven’t seen anything because Season 2 is even weirder and wackier. It’s completely different.
