You know how the story goes. You meet a boy, he seems really nice, but there’s just something a bit off about him. Maybe he’s just reluctant for you to meet his hoarder mom? Or maybe he actually comes from an evil family that uses super scary monsters to get back at their enemies? Let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be an episode of Wynonna Earp if that wasn’t the case though, right? On this week’s episode, “Afraid,” written by Matt Doyle and directed by Ron Murphy, poor Rachel (Martina Ortiz-Luis) fell for cute, somewhat shy, Billy (Billy Bryk), only to learn he’s a member of the evil Clanton family aka “Wyatt Earp’s greatest enemies”.
At least prior to everything happening with Billy, Rachel showed signs that she’s starting to really cherish what she has on the Homestead with Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley), and Nicole (Katherine Barrell). To get some more insight into everything Rachel may be feeling after things with Billy went south, The TV Junkies caught up with Ortiz-Luis. She shared what it means for Rachel to have a family now, what Billy’s sacrifice may mean, and most importantly, what it was like to don Wynonna’s famous leather jacket!
The TV Junkies: I love that Rachel says she “has people now” in Episode 404. For someone who was alone for so long in that BBD facility, how might we see her continue to adjust to living in her new environment?
Martina Ortiz-Luis: I definitely don’t think Rachel grew up with a normal upbringing, and now she’s very happy to have people that are a family to her. They’ve accepted this kid around the house, and she definitely has to adjust to it. She looks up to the women in the house and that dynamic will continue to be developed.
TTVJ: I do worry for her a bit if she continues to wear Wynonna’s jacket, though. What was it like getting to put on that famous jacket?
MOL: That leather jacket is so iconic and to be honest, it was a little bit of a struggle to wear it in -30℃ weather outside, but it’s definitely an honor. Rachel wearing Wynonna’s jacket just shows how much she looks up to Wynonna. It was pretty cool wearing it and I felt pretty badass.
TTVJ: We saw Rachel really get close to Billy. What was it like for her to have that connection with him, and what will his sacrifice mean?
MOL: We see Rachel being a little bit more vulnerable. She’s this new kid that Nicole has to take care of, but she’s always telling the adults she’s not a kid. We do see her taking care of herself in the first couple of episodes, but this is the first time we see her hanging out with someone her age. He’s probably been her closest, and only, friend for the last year and a half. You see a childish-ness to her and she’s a little softer. They are young and developing feelings for one another, which is cute, but it wouldn’t be Wynonna Earp without a supernatural aspect to it. So of course the one boy Rachel is interested in comes from a cursed family. She sees him making that sacrifice, and at this point, she might just be willing to do anything to help him.
TTVJ: We saw Billy was a member of the Clanton family, who seem to be the big villains this season. Is there anything you can preview about this family and the trouble they will cause?
MOL: I’m just going to say, ‘They crazy!’ [laughs]
