Wynonna Earp: Our Feelings On That Season 2 Renewal
|
It’s a happy day for Earpers everywhere as the official word came down that Syfy has indeed renewed Wynonna Earp for Season 2. It’s no secret that the supernatural demon hunting series about Wyatt Earp’s great great granddaughter Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) is a favorite of ours here at The TV Junkies.
If you’ll recall, showrunner Emily Andras and company left us with quite a cliffhanger in the Season 1 finale as little sister Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) inexplicably reached down and touched the “black goo” left behind by the monster Willa almost unleashed. As the screen faded to black, Waverly had a gun trained right on Wynonna and Doc (Tim Rozon).
If you’re anything like us, you’ve been on the edge of your seat since that moment happened and have been eagerly awaiting word from Syfy about a Season 2 renewal. Now that it’s happened, we couldn’t be happier and in fact, we thought it’d be fun to share the range of emotions we’ve been going through since the end of that shocking finale, right up until we heard the news about Season 2. So without further ado, please join us on this emotional roller coaster.
It’s summertime so we know things are getting hot for people everywhere:

But waiting around for the Wynonna Earp renewal just got exhausting at times.

We tried really hard to stay positive and only think good thoughts:

However, we’re not proud to tell you that all this waiting around may have led to some drinking.

What? Can you really blame us?

Because it just made no sense. What was Syfy waiting for when they had such a great show on their hands?

A show made up of really fun, interesting and complex characters played by actors who seemed born to play these roles.

As the wait got longer it just started to make us really angry, almost to where we wanted to hurt someone.

But at least we knew there were tons of Wynonna Earp fans out there who got exactly what we were going through, and were right there with us to provide support when we got a little crazy.

Then we got word that it was renewed and at first we weren’t sure we heard right:

But we were pretty excited to say the least.

We know, we know, that’s actually not THAT surprising to hear.

But you’ll have to excuse us, because we’re going to continue with this celebration.

Yea, it’ll probably just more of this for a while:

Congrats Syfy, for recognizing the gem you have in Wynonna Earp.

Way to go Earpers we did it!

Oh and bring it Emily Andras and Wynonna Earp cast and crew because we’re more than ready for Season 2!

How are you feeling about that Wynonna Earp renewal? What do you want to see in Season 2? Sound off in the comments below!
Wynonna Earp Season 2 will return in 2017.
I even took my background of Wynonna, Doc and Dolls at the party down because it was making me crazy every time I turned on the computer and there was no announcement. Now I can put it back up. Clever article.
You hit the nail on the head
I was (am) a Wynonna Earp addict
I hope to see a high speed chase on horses
I hope Waverly if she is evil will only be that way for three episodes
I hope that Kat will become a regular and she gets to shoot somebody
I wouldn’t mind seeing Dolls and Wynonna hook up
I don’t want to see Wynonna beat herself up to much over killing Willa
I would like to see Willa get some redemption as long as she stays dead
(I miss Natalie Krill )
Spot on. I have got to learn how to gif before Season 2. Another great thing WE has done was introduced me to Bridget’s writings.
Thanks so much for reading Laura!
Excellent show that I’m regrettably very, very far behind on. So happy to hear it’s renewed!
I loved the show from the start because I knew that it had come from Emily Andras and she had done some incredible things on Lost Girl with regards to Bo and Bo and Lauren. Since she wasn’t the showrunner for L.G.’s last season, I can’t blame her BoLo back together, then break up, then back together BS–but at least “whoever” made sure that they were back together for the “end”. Even though I sometimes have hated the “slow burn” that they call it of will a couple ever “get together” when it’s so obvious that they should–I know that tv has to draw it out for a little while to help build up the excitement and bring in more viewers. Though some shows in the past–in my opinion– have waited too long to get their “power couples” together. EXample: Gilmore Girls went back and forth with Luke and Lorelia for years before settleing on year 5 to get them together–then they broke them up once or twice before “suggesting” that they were back together in the season 7 finale–because we later found out their wasn’t going to be a season 8. “Castle” on the other hand did well on “building” on the sexual tension between Castle and Beckett for years–but they, too waited until year 5 to actually get them together–they didn’t have them get married until year 7…and then even further semi-screwed it up by once again “suggesting” that they ended up with kids with a 5 sec breakfast scene at the end of the whole series in year 8–’cause we weren’t sure if there was going to be a season 9 or not–but we were already sure that if we had season 9 it would be without Beckectt–due to the firing of Stana Katic before 9 would ever begin.
Wynonna Earp did all things right with the “slow burn” with Waves and Haught–but gave us a glimpse right from the very second that Nicole walked into that bar and saw Waverly that “something” was going to happen between the two of them. And because of the limited screen time between the two of them–since they weren’t the leads….anytime we got the “slow burn flirting” it didn’t really seem like it was being too drawn out. I was actually surprised at the speed where Waves realized that “Champ” was the “A-Hole” that Wynonna was always telling her he was–well,, I guess she knew it all along, ’cause she did tell Wynonna in the first episode that the “pickings around here just didn’t exisist” and when someone new came into town and showed her some “new” attention…..even if that someone was a woman, it didn’t take Waves to realize that she was worth more than “settling” for a guy like Champ. But once Waves and Nicole had their “discussion” in the squad car–it gave Waves a chance to start to think about things in the other direction—-which apparently was “magnified” by her discussion with Gus about doing what she wanted to do in her life–not what others expected her to do that finally drove her over the edge and gave her the courage to barge into the police station and take control like she did.
When shows have couples “pussy-foot” around about their feelings–instead of just totally acting on them it always drives me crazy. Now, I was surprised when Wave “attacked” Nicole like she did with kissing her like that–only ’cause it seemed so much out of character for Waves—–but I really admired that she did it. then her courage continued by trying to explain to Nicole what was now going on in her head. when everyting was explained and Waves basically said she wanted to be with Nicole and only with Nicole–I thought Nicole kind of “attacked” waves with the smothering of kisses–but I think that Nicole just had all of this pent up energy–since she wanted this all along and was now glad that Waves wanted it too that she might’ve gotten a little “over-selles” with her actions–but then as we continued to see in scenes in further episodes-Nicole still left the ball in Waves court as far as the speed of the relationship and how far it was going to go—though we saw Nicole’s acceptance in the beginning of the “barn” scene–where she knows that Waves having to deal with the whole “Willa” situation was making her “exhausted”. Nicole then showed us that she was frustrated later in that scene when it was pointed out that Waves still hadn’t told Wynonna not only what was going on with just her–but about her and Nicole together. That frustration quickly went away as soon as Nicole saw how beaatuiful Waves looked in her dress and by Nicole’s blushing–you could tell that she was so proud and felt lucky that Waves was now with her. Then at the police station–that frustration came back when Wynonna questioned about Waves and Nicole being “girlfriends” and Waves just said “KINDA”–the look on Nicole’s face and the reaction in her voice when she returned the term–but more in the form of a question, “KINDA?”—that was extrememly hard to watch….but Waves definitely redeemed herself when just when Willa was about to shoot Nicole–Waves admitted to Wynonna that she loved her. Wynonna still looked confused, but with the second pleading look Waves gave her–she knew it was true and Wynonna gave Willa what she wanted.
Waves whole reaction and “actions” to when Nicole was shot was so awesome—you without a doubt–if anyone ever had one before–that Waves was in fear that the love of her life Nicole could die. Her relief when the bullet-proof vest was reviled was pricelss. and in the end, Wynonna made a comment or two that showed Waves it was alright to “be who she was meant to be” and “love who she was meant to love”. The fact that with just a few looks, Wynonna gave Waves her “blessing” was so incredible….and then Waves returned it by kissing Nicole right in front of her without any fear at all. T
The only thing that I think was missing from this moment…and I did tweet Emily about it….but if watch the scene really close and re-wind it several times, you can see that Nicole starts to say something first when she looks in Waves eyes afer the first kiss, then when Wynonna throws Waves coat on them, Nicole starts to say something else—very hard to see when you watch it through the first time……….but I always thought that after Waves kisses Nicole in font of Wynonna and Wy gets up and walks away, that there was a perfect opportunity when Nicole looks at Waves for Nicole to say, “I LOVE YOU, TOO”. Even after Waves kisses her the second time and Nicole quietly tells her to go, Nicole looks after her as Waves grabs her coat and leaves, where they could’ve had Nicole clearly yell after Waves, “I LOVE YOU TOO, WAVES” OR “WAVERLY, I LOVE YOU”–some version of that so that we know for sure that Nicole heard Waves tell that to Wynonna and even though we know that Nicole loves Waves–since she has since their first meeting—–I know the fans would’ve absolutely loved to see Nicole “throw it back to Waves” . Maybe now that we know for sure that there is going to be a season 2–maybe Emily will give it to us at some point—-especially if Waves is affected by that “Good”that she touched and is now some-part “evil”–maybe like in Lost Girl when Bo was going to destroy the world as the “EVIL QUEEN”and then was stopped by the memories of the love she felt for Lauren, Kenz, Trick, and all of her “real” family. Maybe there might be some-sort of “showdown” again between sisters with Wynonna and Waves where Wynonna tries to save her sister–and this time actually does—or maybe the love of Nicole actually brings her back.
To say how they are going to handle all of this will be incredible would be an understatement. THE LAST THING I WILL SAY IS THAT……….EVEN THOUGH I AM AS THRILLED AS ANY OTHER “EARPER” OUT THERE THAT THERE WILL BE A SEASON 2……..I READ SOMEWHERE THAT THERE WILL ONLY BE 10 EPISODES IN THAT SEASON AS OPPOSED TO THE FULL 13 WE GOT IN SEASON 1. NOW, IT MUST BE SOMETHING HAVING TO DO WITH CANANDAN SHOWS OR SOMETHING, ‘CAUSE LOST GIRL NORMAL SEASONS WERE 13……ALTHOUGH SOMEHOW WE GOT 22 IN SEASON 2…….AND THEN BACK TO 13 FOR 3 AND 4 AND THEN THEY ADDED A COUPLE IN THE FINAL SEASON TO GIVE US 16. NOW, NORMAL U.S.A. SHOWS HAVE ANYWHERE FROM 20–24 EPISODES DURING THEIR SEASON (22 SEEMS TO BE THE NORM). ONE OF MY MAIN QUESTIONS IS…..WHY DO CANDIAN MADE SHOWS ONLY DO 13? AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHY IS WYNONNA EARP ONLY GETTING 10 EPISODES FOR SEASON 2 AND NOT 13——–IF THAT REPORT IS INDEED CORRECT? I WOULD THINK WITH THE POPULARITY OF THIS SHOW–THEY MIGHT WANT TO DO THE SAME THAT THEY DID WITH LOST GIRL–AND MAYBE NOT AMP THE NUMBER OF EPISODES TO 22—-BUT MAYBE SOMETHING LIKE 16 OR 18–ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE NORMAL 13—AND ESPEICAILLY ANTHING MORE THAN THIS 10 …..ONCE AGAIN–IF THAT IS TRUE. WOULD THERE BE ANYWAY FOR BRIDGETT OR SOMEONE IN YOUR ORGANIZATION TO FIND OUT IF IT’S TRUE THAT THERE WILL ONLY BE 10 EPISODES TO WYNONNA EARP–SEASON 2…..AND MAYBE EVEN AN EXPLANATION AS TO WHY? I ONLY HOPE THAT IF THE “10” IS TRUE—–THAT ALL THE “EARPERS” THEN START TO SHOW ANY DISSAPOINTMENT IN THE SHORTENING. IT DIDN’T MAKE ANY SINCE TO ANY OF US WHY SYFY WAS TAKING SO LONG TO MAKE THE DECISION / ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE RE-NEWEL…..NOW, WHY TAKE THAT GREAT SHOW AND SHORTEN IT?—THAT MAKES EVEN LESS SENSE……….AT LEAST TO THIS “EARPER”
THANKS FOR LISTENING TO MY LONG, LONG, LONG, THOUGHTS 🙂 🙂
Hi Erin, thanks for sharing your thoughts! The episode order you saw was correct. There will only be 10 episodes in Season 2 instead of 13. Here’s the details on the renewal for you in case you need them. Thanks for following along here at The TV Junkies!
Thanks, Bridget–I made a comment on that article as well. Just curious–has there been any mention to the press about why there is only 10 episodes of WE instead of the normal 13? My guess is that it’s a scheduling problem–and HOPEFULLY NOT that they just didn’t want to order a FULL COMPLETE season. I really wish execs would do it like here in the states where most shows run seasons with 20-22 or 23 episodes–and then there are some split their full seasons into 2 halves–like Lost Girl did for season 5. I remember as a kid where normal fall tv season started with premieres towards the middle to end of September and then would be off for a couple of weeks over the winter, come back after the holidays and then run until the finales would air sometime between 1st and 2nd week of may. if a show had a season where it only had like 10 or 13 episodes, it’s because it was a “mid-season replacement”…..of course, that was also back when there were really only 3 major networks that counted…CBS, NBC, and ABC. Wow, I just can’t imagine that now, could you?
Usually when the episode order is trimmed it’s due to budgets being cut. However overall TV seasons are becoming short & shorter. If you’re not on a broadcast network there’s no way you’ll be doing 22-24 anymore.
