Wynonna Earp: Our Hopes for Season 3
|
Have you been eagerly anticipating a return to Purgatory? You’re not alone! Our team here at The TV Junkies has been counting down the minutes until Wynonna Earp returns to our screens as well! Thankfully, the Season 3 premiere, which will air early Monday, July 16 at 11 p.m. ET on SYFY and then on Friday, July 20 at 9 p.m. ET on SYFY and Space Channel, is just around the corner!
When we last saw Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano), she and Doc (Tim Rozon) had just sent their baby, Alice, away from Purgatory and all the dangerous revenants who would be after her. A new big bad for Season 3, Bulshar, seemed ready to cause trouble and both Dolls (Shamier Anderson) and Nicole (Katherine Barrell) seemed to know more about him than they were letting on. Oh, and in the season’s final minute we learned that Wynonna knew exactly where to find Mama Earp all this time.
With all that happening right at the end of Season 2, we have so many questions about what’s to come our way in Season 3. So several members of our team here at The TV Junkies got together to discuss the show and share our thoughts before Season 3 starts. Check out what we are most looking forward to, what burning questions we have and which Purgatory citizens we want more of!
Season 2 cliffhanger you most want answers to:
Monica: I mean, how do you choose just one? I’m obviously excited to know more about Waverly’s parentage, Nicole’s backstory, and what exactly Jeremy is, but I think I’m most looking forward to learning more about Mama Earp. What if she was the true heir and Ward wasn’t? Why did she leave? Is he associated with the cult? What if she already knows Nicole? Is that where Nicole had heard so much about Waverly? Megan Follows is going to bring so much to this role, I know, and I know any guesses I have will be totally wrong, and I’m completely fine with it.
Kelly Townsend: Mama Earp! We’ve spent two seasons wondering about Wynonna and Waverly’s mother, especially in light of Waverley’s paternal worries, so to finally meet her in the flesh will be incredibly rewarding. The announcement that she would be played by Megan Follows increased my excitement tenfold.
Bridget Liszewski: I have to agree with the team here and go with Mama Earp! Seeing insight into why exactly it is Mama left and what she seems to know about Bulshar will undoubtedly provide all kinds of new information and clues. While I’m nervous about how Wynonna knowing where Mama has been will effect my beloved Earp sisters, I am so excited to see Megan Follows and Melanie Scrofano share scenes together. I don’t think we’re quite prepared for how awesome that’s going to be!

The Season 3 trailer has you most excited and eager to learn more about:
Kelly Townsend: Honestly, there was a lot to deconstruct in that first trailer (potato-licking notwithstanding), but mostly I am excited to see what Melanie Scrofano has in store for us now that Wynonna is post-pregnancy and ready to kick some ass. She delivered an unforgettable performance in the Season 2 finale and I can’t wait for what’s coming next from her.
Bridget Liszewski: The whole vibe of the Season 3 trailer was so different from last year. It was much more serious and the stakes seem higher than ever, all fitting given that Wynonna had to give up her baby. While she may be riding bulls and drinking in the trailer, I think Wynonna is going to be more serious than ever about breaking the curse for Alice Michelle, and in the process we’re bound to get some Melanie Scrofano excellence that I cannot wait for!
Monica: What the hell happened in Pussy Willows? Are those dead bodies? Is someone hanging, or is Nicole just talking to someone on a stage? And please tell me this was after the mechanical-bull shenanigans.
Hopes for WayHaught in Season 3:
Monica: I’m looking forward to seeing how they grow in their relationships with other people. I think the strongest TV couples are characters first, couples second, so I’m excited to see how everyone else feels about “domestic WayHaught” and how that will impact them as a couple. Wynonna’s concerns about Nicole’s relationship with Waverly were valid, although technically there was goo involved, and Waverly really takes what her sister says to heart, so that could have repercussions. And Nicole may know that Goononna was technically the one who was cutting her to pieces, but how could you ever completely let that go? Also, I hope they continue to build their trust after it was kind of wrecked after the events of Season 2.
Kelly Townsend: I feel like these two are just stealing kisses and moments alone between crises, so it would be wonderful to have a calm moment where they can go on a date, or plan out their future home walking around Purgatory’s equivalent of IKEA.
Bridget Liszewski: A lot went down for these two at the end of last season, and while they seem to be stronger and more together than ever because of it, I still worry there may be some residual trust issues that they’ll have to take care of. I’ve always loved the way the show has made both these characters complex and interesting outside of their relationship. I hope we learn more about both Waverly and Nicole’s pasts this season.

Non-main cast character from previous seasons we want more of:
Kelly Townsend: Mercedes needs to get her face back ASAP. It felt like we were just getting to know her when the Widows took over, plus I’m not sure if I’m ready for a season without Dani Kind.
Monica: Nedley. I’m nervous about his journey in Season 3, because there’s a lot of trailer speculation that something happens to him and Nicole becomes the sheriff. But I know if that does happen, it will be for a good reason, and his journey will continue to be entertaining. I had always hoped he’d end up with Gus, but I think that’s a hopeless cause now.
Or, you know, Mercedes, if that’s an option.
Bridget Liszewski: I mean it’s me, of course I want Dani Kind back as Mercedes! I don’t care how it happens or what explanation Emily Andras wants to give us for how Mercedes gets her face back. I’ll pretty much believe and go with anything! I also was super glad to see Bobo in the trailer because it wouldn’t be a proper Wynonna Earp season without some Bobo Del Ray madness injected into it.

New Season 3 character that has us most excited:
Kelly Townsend: Mama Earp aside, it’s a true toss-up for me between Zoie Palmer’s Jolene and Chantel Riley’s Kate. They’re both terrific actresses and notorious scene-stealers, which means everyone will have to be at their best to match them, raising an impossibly high bar for the season.
Bridget Liszewski: I love that Emily Andras is dipping into the Lost Girl well and having both Zoie Palmer and Anna Silk guest this season, but I think after seeing that trailer and how badass Chantel Riley looked that I’m going to have to say Kate. We don’t know much about who Kate is or why she’s in Purgatory, but I love Riley on CBC’s Frankie Drake Mysteries and can’t wait to see what she brings to this role.
Monica: Do I have to pick just one? Ugh, fine. KATE! I was excited about her character beforehand, and the trailer only heightened that feeling. She looks like a badass! But if I could get an honorable mention, I’d have to say Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. Jolene. We know next to nothing about her, except she seems to have some sort of issue with Nicole, what with her choking her and all. That seems like it could be a bad time.
Non-romantic relationship we most want to explore in Season 3:
Monica: It’s a four-way tie between Doc and Waverly, Wynonna and Nicole, Jeremy and Dolls, and the potato and whoever is licking it.
Kelly Townsend: I’m really excited for the upcoming rivalry between Doc’s signature facial hair and Jeremy’s baby ‘stache. Who will come out on top? Will Doc give Jeremy grooming tips or pull a power move and shave him in the night? I have to know!
Bridget Liszewski: One of the best things about Wynonna Earp is the way you can take any two characters and pair them up. A pairing that I always really, really love is Doc and Waverly. I think Tim Rozon and Dominique Provost-Chalkley are magical together, not to mention all the interesting dynamics that exist in the relationship between those two characters.

Wynonna Earp Season 3 premieres Monday, July 16 at 11 p.m. on SYFY in the U.S. and on Friday, July 20 at 9 p.m. SYFY and Space Channel in Canada.
“and which Purgatory citizens we want more of!” – Nicole, always Nicole; and more Needly would be nice too!
“Monica: I mean, how do you choose just one?” – Monica wins best response with this point because it is so true! That said, for me, what’s with that look Nicole and Dolls? Is this something we’ll learn they’ve secretly been working on in the off screen moments of S2 or is it a recent reveal? Why did Nicole chose now to share information with Dolls to form this adventure for the duo? “What if she already knows Nicole? Is that where Nicole had heard so much about Waverly?” – going all the way back to season one to tie in elements interesting.
“I think the strongest TV couples are characters first, couples second” – I cannot like this statement enough Monica! Too often it feels pairings, certainly one side (usually the guest character), are just the romance and when they do venture out into other plots it doesn’t really effect the romance even though it should realistically half the time when you have a small main group that’s constantly around each other and it’s only for an episode or two they get out; also you run into pairings that are focused on one side more so even if both are mains you get a lopsided romance – very few pairings remember the characters are individuals also when together which is why Emily was right to have Nicole with Wynonna first before doing a WayHaught scene after the introduction…as much as I wanted more of them together I’ll admit in this instance she was right in not going there yet. I’m still waiting on a Doc-Nicole scene as they are the only two main characters not to have a solo scene together. A good balance of romance and individualism is something I hope for them every season!
“it would be wonderful to have a calm moment where they can go on a date, or plan out their future home walking around Purgatory’s equivalent of IKEA.” – this sounds adorable Kelly and I agree, just because your a drama show doesn’t mean it has to be full on drama for everyone all the time; I know Emily has her kick about how no one wants to watch someone on the couch multiple episodes but I disagree with that as it’s nice to see the happy too. WayHaught as individuals can be a part of the drama without their romance being dramatic all the time.
“It felt like we were just getting to know her when the Widows took over” – SO true Kelly; I’m going to chalk it up to a short season thus the rush to do the plot but I feel we could have gotten at least one more episode with Mercedes as herself before the Widows story kicked in.
“Will Doc give Jeremy grooming tips” – that would be cute! Again my pick for non-romantic relationship scene would be Doc-Nicole because we haven’t seen it so who knows what they’d be like; after that I’d say Dolls-Nicole or Wynonna-Nicole; also Needly and everyone because he is so the parent to all those kids except maybe Doc who he’s not crazy about ha. 🙂
I looooove how u seem to be a diehard haught fan just like me. Nicole is the show for me I won’t even lie about it. And I hope Emily soon realises that no wayhaught fan will ever complain about watching them sitting on a couch doing nothing or just watching tv! It’ll be the best hour of television! Also, I think we need a wayhaught/Nicole haught spinoff 😁
Nicole haught!!! More of her is what this show needs!
Ok, I have 10 notes for myself
1. First of all I wanna say that this review hopes made me crave for the season 3 of the one and only badass woman gunslinger wynonna earp.
2. I want to see nicole’s dark past because i have this feeling that she already knew waverly earp or the earp family since before. Like she has been monitoring them since day 1.
3. I want to know Doll’s back story. I know he and Nicole has background check about the bulshar cult. The way they look on each other’s eyes at the ending of s2 prove it right.
4. I love jeremy and he is a great tech guy, but something about him is making me feel curious to know the real him.
5. I would love to see drunk wynonna and nicole again with the pissed waverly becoming a raging dragon scolding the two drunkards. 😂
6. I want to see more of wynonna and nicole killing partner duo and continue as dog and cat relationship, but still friends.
7. I want to see nicole having more interactions with all of the wynonna earp characters. And to the mama earp. How will she act towards mama earp? Will mama earp be good to nicole or not?
8. Of course i want to see the “domesti wayhaught” not only in sweet mode, but also in jealousy or against mode. 😂 Like another test to their relationship to spice things up more and more.
9. I want to see if wayverly told nicole the truth of her cheating with rosita. And how will nicole take that. And same goes to how nicole explain herself of not telling to waverly about her ex wife shay.
10. I want to see baby alice with her mommy wynonna and daddy doc. More of doc and wynonna scene. Sorry dolls, but i really love doc so im team doc 😂
