*** Warning: This article contains spoilers for the Wynonna Earp episode “House of Memories” ***
Well Earpers raise your hand if you saw that Wynonna Earp twist coming! The music swelled as Bobo (Michael Eklund) and Willa (Natalie Krill) walked off into the sunset together, poised to cross over the boundaries of the Ghost River Triangle and set all hell loose. “House of Memories,” written by Alexandra Zarowny and directed by Paolo Barzman, was a jam-packed penultimate episode to say the least.
We saw everyone dusting off their best formal wear and Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon) having to escape a very Buffalo Bill-esque revenant. The slow burn romance between Dolls (Shamier Anderson) and Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) also came to a head as the two finally kissed. Elsewhere, there’s no longer any doubt in Purgatory that Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole (Katherine Barrell) are most definitely an item.
Just exactly what are Bobo and Willa up to? How can they be stopped and will we find out more about why Willa is helping him? Only one episode remains to give us the answers to these questions. In the meantime, showrunner Emily Andras joined The TV Junkies for our weekly breakdown of this week’s episode, and she’s fielding all of our questions heading into next week. Read on to find out what’s in store for what’s sure to be a surprising Season 1 finale.
The TV Junkies: So that was another great ending with Willa and Bobo walking off together into the Purgatory version of the sunset. What a great shot!
Emily Andras: I know! It was so good with the fog and I really liked the song that Andrea Higgins helped us choose. That’s that! They just walk off into the sunset.
TTVJ: They are just living happily ever after now?
EA: Living happily ever after and getting out the Ghost River Triangle, buying a little B&B in Vermont, as you do. It’ll have a little room for his fur coats.
TTVJ: Willa got her memories from Constance back, but will we learn why she was so willing to help Bobo?
EA: Constance took Willa from Bobo because then she had what he wanted most and could force his hand to find the bones of her sons. At some point then Constance lost Willa and she had to bluff.
We’ll definitely find out more about Bobo and Willa’s whole deal once we visit them at their Vermont B&B. It’s important to remember that this is a girl that was taken at 12 and kept prisoner for years. It’s not uncharacteristic to have Stockholm syndrome or be a broken person after that happens. I’m not excusing Willa’s behavior, but I just think there’s a lot of history there to dig into.
TTVJ: I started to wonder what was wrong with me because I found that ending with Bobo and Willa to be pretty romantic.
EA: That’s fine because you’re seeing Bobo in a completely different light. If you look back at the season, hopefully you’ve realized that everything he did was for a reason we don’t see revenants often perform, which was for love. That’s really interesting and he obviously cares about her, on top of the fact that he needs her to escape his prison. It kind of was romantic — a very warped sense of romance!
TTVJ: Willa took Peacemaker with her when she left, so what does Wynonna do now? Will it even work for Wynonna if she gets it back?
EA: Yea that’s not great! We need that! I don’t know if it’ll work though. When she was in the biker club with Dolls it really fizzled right out. It seemed to have made a choice.
TTVJ: What a fickle gun!
EA: What a fickle gun! I think it’s just confused right? I think it’s confused as to who the true heir is. There may be more to this gun than we think. The gun obviously seems to have a mind of its own and seems to know right from wrong. It also decides when it’s going to dispatch and when it’s not.
Right now I don’t even know how Wynonna is going to get her hands back on the gun. I think that’s the number one challenge and we’ll worry about it working later. Right now we just need to know that Bobo and Willa should not cross the Ghost River Triangle with Peacemaker or something terrible is going to happen. Basically the prison is going to be open and the Ghost River Triangle walls are coming down.
TTVJ: In this episode we learn that Bobo (or I guess we should call him Robert) was actually a confidant of Wyatt’s. Will their history be explored at all in the finale?
EA: There are certainly hints of it in the next episode and some unusual characters might show up to give us some insight into that. So stay tuned! Maybe.
TTVJ: In other major news, Dolls and Wynonna finally kissed! Why was now the right time for that to happen and will things get awkward with Doc in the finale?
EA: People are pretty busy in the finale so it’s hard to be petty about the girl you like kissing another dude. That being said, he is Doc Holliday.
Why was it the right time? Because I think Wynonna finally got something from Dolls that she had been waiting for all season, which was approval. In a weird way she got approval and affection in a sense that he really got her, understood her and cared about her. He didn’t just care about her because she was the Earp heir and had these abilities, but because she was Wynonna. Things were pretty fraught and she was feeling emotionally low at that point, so who don’t you kiss when that’s happening?
That being said, it was a really romantic moment and again Melanie Scrofano just brings it with all the feels. The speech that she gives before she kisses him was just amazing with how she didn’t even want to be the heir, but now that she’s had it she doesn’t know how to go back to being another screwed up girl. I thought it was good. It’s just too bad she looks so hideous in that dress!
TTVJ: I think everyone was thankful for Melanie in that dress.
EA: That dress was unbelievable right? That dress can have its own spinoff. Melanie Scrofano looking amazing!
TTVJ: This was another episode that will make WayHaught fans really happy. It’s really going to be a tradeoff of Melanie in that dress versus Haught and her hair down.
EA: Exactly! I don’t even know why I bother with special effects. All I need to give you guys is pretty girls in dresses with their hair down. I could do that in half the budget!
TTVJ: How did the combination of Willa’s reaction and then Champ at the party push Waverly to make her relationship public?
EA: I think when she heard Willa say it out loud that she hadn’t — although, I would argue that Waverly has tried to tell Wynonna but she’s just been oblivious. I think circumstances forced them to become public more than any decision on Waverly’s part. I also think she wasn’t necessarily hiding. Her discomfort with Willa’s take on the whole situation, and accusing her of keeping a secret from Wynonna, just sparked so many other memories for Waverly of why she doesn’t like her older sister.
It’s so interesting that Waverly’s relationship with Willa is completely different than Wynonna’s relationship with Willa — even when they were children. There’s that “trust your gut” feeling that Waverly has in spades. She’s so intuitive and something about Willa makes her skin crawl, even as she tries to be a good sister and be “good Waverly” like she always is. It’s interesting that her instincts were right.
The incident with Champ was good for several reasons. Purgatory is still a small town and that can be a really precarious place to be gay. I like that even Champ was more angry about the fact that Nicole was a cop than a woman. Sheriff Nedley had a moment of ‘oh!’ and then was like ‘that’s their own private business.’ I think it speaks to how both Nicole and Waverly are regarded in the town — they are so beloved — the town may be more accommodating to their romance than Waverly had feared. It was a nice moment. It doesn’t have to be full of angst going forward necessarily … although it probably will be! [laughs]
TTVJ: Nedley doesn’t know though that they are getting down in his office all the time.
EA: I know! He’s like ‘why are the cushions on my couch all rattled? Why does it smell like vanilla perfume in here?’
TTVJ: We haven’t seen much more about Dolls and his lizard eye. Will we get some answers on what’s going on with him in the finale?
EA: I give you a 50 percent chance of lizard eye in the finale. Considering what we’re facing in the finale we need to bring all our resources. Wynonna’s leather jacket needs to come back, Doc’s mustache needs to get in the game and Dolls might have to engage lizard eyes. So yes, it’s possible!
TTVJ: Only one episode remains. What do you guys have in store for us in the finale?
EA: There are so many insane things happening and the stakes are so high! So many surprises and so many insane cliffhangers and emotional heartbreak. Jokes in the chaos of course, but I just want your mouth to be on the floor the entire time. Definitely pee beforehand! It is delicious crazy Wynonna Earp madness.
