Wynonna Earp’s Dominique Provost Chalkley Reflects On Waverly’s Season 2 Journey
|
It’s safe to say Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost Chalkley) has been through a lot on this season of Wynonna Earp. From being possessed by the evil goo that turned her into Gooverly, to questioning whether or not she’s truly an Earp, or human for that matter, all while building her relationship with Nicole (Katherine Barrell), Waverly has had a very busy season indeed. Whether or not she’ll get answers to questions, such as whether she’s half revenant or if Bobo (Michael Eklund) is her father, that have plagued her all season long still remains to be seen. The Season 2 finale episode will air this Friday at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy and Space, and will see Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) desperate to defeat the Widows.
Not only has Waverly been fighting her own demons, but she’s been right by sister Wynonna’s side as she has done the same, pregnant and all. For Provost-Chalkley, the experience of playing alongside Scrofano, who was pregnant in real life, was more powerful than she ever could have imagined. She recently spoke exclusively with The TV Junkies ahead of the finale about acting with Scrofano, Waverly’s journey this season and why the ups and downs this season may have been the best thing in the end for WayHaught’s relationship.
The TV Junkies: It’s hard to believe we’re already at the end of Season 2, and Waverly has had quite the season. Now that all is said and done, what was it like going on that journey with her?
Dominique Provost Chalkley: It is crazy, and crazy to look back once you’ve been through the process. It was a huge season for Waverly, and more unexpectedly this year than last. When we first started I genuinely thought that Waverly had the most incredible arc in Season 1. Then Season 2 was just even more, but in a different way. Season 1 she was understanding who she was, and now Season 2 you think she has it all together, but actually there’s so much more that comes once you’ve started to understand who you are as a woman. That’s way more interesting almost because it’s like ‘how am I going to fit in as this person,’ when it’s all the dynamics you’ve been around you’re whole life. Really, Waverly has made some big mistakes this year, and she’s gone through a hell of a lot.
Looking back, I just feel really proud of everyone to be honest. Everyone had a huge season this year. It wasn’t just one character or another, we all individually had a huge journey, and they all just mesh so nicely. Mel has had the biggest journey this season, and I almost see it as her season. The story we told was so beautiful and I’m just glad I could be by her side.
TTVJ: A lot of attention, rightfully so, has been paid to all the special skills you got to show off this year. Of everything you had to do — cheerleading, Gooverly, singing, the sticks — which one did you enjoy doing the most?
DPC: I think probably the sticks actually, which may be unexpected for some people because I love singing and dancing so much. With the sticks it was so new for me and a whole new skill. I felt like it was a real treat to learn something specifically for a TV show. I do love working hard! So every night at home with the sticks, in front of my mirror, I had a little date night. It was super fun and I think that’s the best gift ever. I also felt so badass because I was fighting with sticks.

TTVJ: The Earp sisters are the relationship we’re all rooting for on the show, and you and Mel had some very powerful moments this season. What was it like for you working with her this season? It felt like, as a viewer, your true feelings for Mel almost came across at times as Waverly.
DPC: Working with Mel this season was the most magical experience I’ve ever had as an actress — so much so that it surprised me every time I was in a scene with her. When they told us the bombshell that Mel was pregnant, after the rush of excitement, the tears and all that as a friend, then a really big instinct kicked in. It was like ‘Oh, this means I need to do everything in my power to support her both onscreen and off screen. We are going to do something super special that is thrilling and exciting, not only for us as a group, but women and everyone out there to be able to see this in a show like Wynonna Earp.’
So when I went home, I sat down and was like ‘how are we going to do this?’ I understood what a huge journey Mel was embarking on, so it’s really sweet and I’m flattered you say that because it surprised me in the scenes. I’d read the scenes and expect it to go one way, and then Mel would arrive with her depth of emotion, and how full she is as an actress. Any time she attacks anything it’s so full and rich. She came, every single scene we did together, with all that, and then something changed for me as a human and as Waverly, where I felt like I had to be the big sister in this.
It was like I couldn’t break down because I had to be there for Mel, and that is why this season has been so great. Waverly’s season this year was different because of Wynonna’s season. She had to step into shoes that she was being forced to step into and therefore, you see a woman who is forced to be there for someone, and something comes out of her and surprises her at how capable she is of doing that. I think that’s really beautiful when you see the Earp sisters, whereas you traditionally would see Wynonna being there for Waverly, and now being able to do that for Wynonna is a really lovely shift and dynamic.
I think, especially this year, it was as if it was meant to be. It was like Mel just turned up, and gave us all a gift, and we just ran with it. How lucky we are that we had that opportunity!

TTVJ: The scenes between Waverly and Bobo (Michael Eklund) are always so captivating. You and Michael are so great in those scenes together. What are they like to film?
DPC: Working with Michael Eklund is the most fun thing ever. It is so fun! I look at the call sheet and think ‘Oh yay! I get to work with Michael today!’ He’s the most playful actor I’ve ever worked with. We have a rehearsal before we film and sometimes it’s very quick, but with Michael it’s like a good twenty minutes of just exploring before we start. That’s thrilling for an actor to be able to play and work it out, see the beats and highlights, where we’re going to find a connection and also break away from each other. It truly doesn’t feel like work.
I actually filmed those scenes in the mental hospital on a Saturday because we had to work around his schedule. I was the most giddy, happy human. Everyone on crew was like ‘ugh, it’s Saturday,’ and I was like ‘Yeah! Let’s do this!’ We truly had a blast and I think you can tell on screen.
There’s such an intensity between our two characters, and that’s been the interesting thing right from the get go. Waverly and Bobo are such extremes, and yet, they have something in common that we can’t really pinpoint. That’s thrilling to watch because when Waverly is around Bobo she is faced with a part of herself that comes out. He forces it out of her. It’s hard for her to accept that of herself in the moment. That’s why I tend to play it quite static. She’s just frozen because there’s emotion inside of her that she doesn’t know how to face — as well as being petrified of this crazy man rolling around on his knees in front of her.
TTVJ: While WayHaught has had some ups and downs this season, it was so lovely to see that no matter what timeline or universe they are in, those two are soulmates. Does that mean things are looking pretty good on the WayHaught front moving forward?
DPC: It’s hard to know, but I think what this season showed is that they have a true connection. It’s real love that they are experiencing, and that’s what we’ve been trying to show from the beginning. I think just because WayHaught has grown apart for a moment, had to find themselves and then come back together, that it’s all just part of the process of most relationships. I don’t know anyone out there that can honestly say they haven’t had ups and downs in relationships, especially when you’re young.
Waverly is like 21 or 22, so she’s working out who she is as a woman. Nicole is the first woman she’s ever been with, and not only that, she’s having a struggle with identity. These are huge, huge things that have put a strain on the relationship. I think it was inevitable they’d have a few hurdles to get over. What’s so lovely though is that they always come back together because they love each other.
I try to explain to people that they should focus on the things that really matter. I understand completely that people were hurt by the course of events that happened. It’s hard and heartbreaking that it’s happening, but the facts are that they love each other in a way more profound way than any of that. They needed to go through that to work those things out, so if anything, it brings them closer in the long run.
TTVJ: Do you ever think “let’s just have them go on a normal date?” [laughs]
DPC: Totally! [laughs] I thought we were going to have it when we were playing pool. I thought ‘oh they are just going on a date and going to play pool!’ But then Rosita was like ‘let’s have a baby shower and bash some babies!’ To be honest though, it’s way more interesting this way. Of course it’d be lovely to just go on a date, but we do that in our normal lives. Kat and I go for brunch, we’ve got that down fine. When we’re on set we want to be killing demons and all that good stuff.

TTVJ: What did you think when you heard that Nicole was married? We haven’t seen any resolution on that as of yet, but it seems like it was pretty clear to Shay where Nicole’s heart lie.
DPC: I was really surprised. If I’m being really honest, I was a little relieved. [laughs] I thought everyone was going to hate me up until that point, and how would I ever be forgiven. So I thought ‘at least it’s not just me!’ I was surprised, but also expecting it to go a bit further, manifest itself into a bit of a bigger problem. I think maybe we already had enough problems by that point that it was time to come back together.
She was also the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life. I was like ‘of all of the people, Emily. Of all of the people you bring in the most beautiful actor I’ve ever seen in my life.’ I was like ‘oh great!’ [laughs]
What do you think of Waverly’s journey this season? Add your predictions for the finale below as well!
Wynonna Earp airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on Syfy and Space.
dom always talks about how it is to work with mel, tim, michael etc. i wish she would also talk more about working with kat. the interviews always kind of skip on that. the wayhaught relationship is as important as the earp sister relationship for a lot of people. and for some, even more. i would have loved to see her being asked about how much her and kat’s dynamics have changed/grown over the course of the series, what is it like filming those wayhaught scenes knowing that they would be obsessed over by fans, etc. we already know so much about what she feels about working with others. nice interview, but a little disappointing.
There are lots of videos of joint interviews w/ Dom & Kat on YT. Some are from SDCC; some from ClexaCon. They talk about making out, about the cheerleading scene, about how knowing how important these characters are to some members of the audience affects their performance, etc. It’s clear they adore each other & are extremely comfortable touching each other. They are just delightful and funny to watch. I doubt that I can post links here, which is too bad b/c I could recommend the best vids (some audio is difficult to hear b/c of all the background noise), but you can go just look them up on YT and watch ALL the videos of their interviews so you don’t miss a thing!
It´s interesting to hear Dom´s opinion about the Waverly/Bobo scenes. (“..when Waverly is around Bobo she is faced with a part of herself that comes out. He forces it out of her…”)
I´ve watched the scenes until now as a woman who remembers this underlying fear of a close encounter with a powerfull and dangerous man … trying to be strong/brave.
These scenes are so powerfull and 1×12 (tree house) is my favourite acting-wise.
Sorry …1×13 of course
Great interview again, Bridget! I love the way you ask questions in your interviews. This one in particular. Dom is so giving with her answers and we can see how invested she is in Waverly, to her cast-mates and to everyone working on Wynonna Earp. It really resonates with each interview she gives. I think Dom has a very good point in where she highlights that we all need to focus on what matters (between WayHaught). Those events that happened are just bumps on the road, not that we should sweep it under the rug or anything, but I feel like WayHaught is better for these “bumps” and can grow from it.
This season has been AMAZING for Waverly’s character growth. If you compare her to season 1, she is so much better, in so many ways. Who knew Dom was so talented? Wow, Waverly has made us fall in love with her all over again! This season was really exciting for her and I’m so glad Dom had the opportunity to showcase all her skills.
My prediction for the finale is that Bobo is going to offer (give) Waverly to Clootie as an exchange for his protection and the gang is going to have to fight like hell to get her back. Making Waverly his “third wife” since Constance is no longer in the picture. Cliff hanger? Wynonna giving birth to a penguin (nods to Emily). Haha! Woops this got really long so I’ll leave it here.
i Think DPC doesn’t talk about this on purpose, because she knows the fan are obsessing about this.
I have really enjoyed Waverly’s arc this season. She’s been able to do so many different things, and it’s been really fun to watch, but it’s also very appropriate to the character: Waverly is still so young and she’s feeling her way, trying new things. Thank goodness the show found an actress who embraces all these challenges, because it’s been super fun for the fans.
I continue to be impressed by Dominique Provost-Chalkley as both an actress and a person. Let’s hope Emily Andras keeps devising cool stuff for Waverly to do!
She literally said her and Kat go to brunch together. Come on now. We’ve heard over and over again ie SDCC interviews as an example, how much they enjoy working together and the Wayhaught relationship. And the Earp sister relationship is very very obviously the core of the show. And I’m saying that as someone who came for the gay, stayed for the cray.
Lovely interview. Great focus on Waverly’s journey. So happy to hear the team still enjoys working with each other and to have behind the scenes info on what it’s like to work with these amazing people and have Emily Andras’ storytelling behind it. I enjoy hearing the little worries about will people be upset at her character, or the happy thought of her and Kat hanging out in real life. What a privilege to have a cast who are willing to be candid. Thanks.
I feel the same at first but then I understand. I think Dom would like to emphasize other aspects of the show & I can actually see how much she adore Mel.
I’m not complaining because she’s done so much fan service with Kat.
I actually feel sad that Shamier is rarely mentioned nor endorsed by his castmates except Kat who always make sure she remembers him ir tags him for any praise worthy mention of him on twitter. It seemed that he’s only close with Kat. I actually wanted him & Kat’s character to grow in S3 & do some police hunting together.
I was looking over this casts body of work and one really stuck out to me. Katherine has really achieved a lot from acting ,writing, producing, directing she’s a real multitasker she doesn’t seem to get enough credit it all seems to shift towards Melanie. who is great but I feel they are all need to bring the show together. Just my thoughts
God i so agree with every word you said! They keep talking about Melanie’s acting chops but that would obviously be highlighted because of the unparalleled screentime she gets as the lead. Even Dom who gets almost the same screentime. Kat gets lesser amount of scenes but she literally owns every scene she is in! Her screen presence, specially as Nicole is amazing! If she had the same screentime as the other two, just imagine what goods she could bring to the table other than what she already does! I feel this show does her a lot of disservice. Season 2 has underutilized her potential which really is sad. We keep getting really long and useless Doc scenes while Nicole who is also a fan favorite, hardly gets any. Kat deserves so much more appreciation and applaud for her talent and skills, specially by the people involved with the show. I really hope S3 would be different in this regard but not holding high hopes. Atleast give her the respect she deserves by featuring her in the opening title credits! i will scream if freaking Jeremy gets that next season!
also lets face it it was wayhaught that got this show rolling and the community that it represents
“Of course it’d be lovely to just go on a date, but we do that in our normal lives. Kat and I go for brunch, we’ve got that down fine”
“She was also the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life. I was like ‘of all of the people, Emily. Of all of the people you bring in the most beautiful actor I’ve ever seen in my life.’ I was like ‘oh great!’ [laughs]”
I don’t know if it’s because English is not my mother language, but she mixed the lives of the characters with the personal lives … I was confused.
Ok marketing is critical but C’mon… fire and gasoline! Fan fictions will blow up around the internet!! Maybe I’m just rude, sorry.
She was talking about the actress who plays SHAE when she said, “She was also the most beautiful woman I had ever seen in my life. I was like ‘of all of the people, Emily. Of all of the people you bring in the most beautiful actor I’ve ever seen in my life.’ I was like ‘oh great!’ [laughs]”
I highly doubt that fanfic of Shae & Waverly is going to blow up the internet, but people have strange ships.
I thought Shae was beautiful, and I’m sure she’s even more beautiful IRL, but I only have eyes for Waverly, and I would pick her any day over Shae. I love Dom, too. I’m so glad she is playing this role and playing it opposite Kat!
Great interview! Dominique is so cute and funny, I love to read or hear everything she says. Waverly’s arc is so interesting, the character really grew up this season.
No more stupid wayhaught angst next season please. We have had enough for the next 10 seasons. And i don’t think anyone would mind them having a normal date or domestic moments. Dom and Kat going out for brunch doesn’t negate the need to have more casual onscreen wayhaught moments. Look how even that moment of Waverly sleepily leaning into Nicole while standing made the fans crazy! Not one complaint! No more cheating and secret spouses please.
The cheerleader dance with the fist pump will never get old!
If Waverly is early 20s I wonder how old Nicole is – mids or late…maybe even 30s?
Emily hasn’t been one to leave plots hanging on this series so it’s not if Shay will pop back up but when; I love she and Waverly were civil to each other and I hope that continues, also that she and Nicole have a continued peaceful seeming split.
“I actually want him & Kat’s character to grow in S3 & do some police hunting together.” – team Ginger Dragon April! 🙂
Season’s finale has left me with too much emotions & questions left unanswered.
The Wayhaught kiss at the end felt like it was Kat & Dom in real life telling us ” finally, we are done filming” celebrating the outcome of their partnership as Wayhaught.
On the other hand, it felt like Nicole coming home to her wife and it’s been a long day but the sight of the love of her life transforms her into a submissive soft puppy and just made her forget the shit she has to deal with later on at work.
The ending left me with 12358.99 questions but … the show delivered its strongest message in the form of Melanie & the rest of the team.
It was a message that our strength & capability is not defined or limited by gender. Mel’s pregnancy was a blessing in disguise because it was the perfect situation for them to deliver their message clearly.
This show made me realize that our ability to fall in love to another person despite their gender & be inspired by that love & pushes us to be the best version of ourself is all that matters. I am glad it was well emphasized by this show.
I love how they wrote the character of Nicole. She is confident, strong yet simple & non apologetic of her feelings for once. The Wayhaught story was unique & stronger compared to any gay couple on tv or movies I have ever seen so far. When they fall in love with each other, it was pure & clear & it was not out of confusion. They deal with it & faced it together despite of the uncertainty & fears. We’ve seen Waverly scared of what she felt but she chose to act on it because she was more scared of the thought of losing Nicole. The woman she had a deep connection with the moment she first met her.
The EARP sisters,Wynonna in particular was a mess but she redeemed herself & took responsibility. Her character reminds us that we are allowed to make mistakes & sometimes we make bad choices but hey, it’s part of being a human being. The best thing is, you learn from it & be wiser next time.
The show tells us you can be who you are & be proud of who you are. Wether you are a person with an old soul or with high moral standards but you can be with people who are beautifully damaged & embrace them because sometimes, they are the balance you might be needing in your life.
You may plan your life ahead but remember, shit might happen along the way & you have to consider that.So be flexible because by nature, you are formed ti be that.
The show reminded me once again that family isn’t always by blood because I am a living proof of that. I have a total of 17 brothers & sisters both from mother & father side & never had a sibling of my own parents but I met this person and she became my only family away from home. She was closer to my than my family. She was & had become my own family & never felt alone.
Its amazing how fictional characters on a super natural show have covered this relatable real life issues we mostly face personally each day & get the strength from it.
Some Earpers I read are not really into ghost, gun, west slinger type of story but it was the heart the actors put into their characters that have attracted some people to watch it.
In addition, let me also say as much as I bow to Mel’s amazing performances ( that’s given) & to Dom’s multi talents & adorableness or Doc’s tears shredding my heart to pieces or Dolls who was always looking for the whole gang, let me pour out my deepest love to my fave character & person Kat Barrell.
I’m excited for for Nicole & Dolls characters to hopefully develop beautifully. I am excited to see them dealing with real Purgatory cases. I wanted to see Nicole to hopefully kick ass & get to show us the officer who graduated as top of her class and not just be the one being thrown helplessly, shot or in the brink of death as she was on S2.
I am hopeful we get to see a bit of her backstory & her day to day work life. Kat gets to play more than just a love interest ( not that I am pleased with it but..) She’s more than just a lover. She’s got more than that. I want to see more of her protect & serve the normal citizens of Purgatory.
I wanted Kat’s character to be exciting & to grow so that she has more diversed stories to tell when she gets to interact with her fans because I love how she passionately tells her story. She’s beautiful & and sexy when she shares her thoughts or opinion.
My god, what a beautiful, genuine, funny, pleasing & amazing human being as a character & as an actor. She’s my favorite person this year & one my biggest inspiration ever. I rarely feel atar struck to an actor but she for some reason is everything.
So thank you Wynonna Earp team from its Showrunner to the cast, crew, writters & everyone who was part of it. Thank you for introducing Kat to us & the wholw show & cast members as a whole.
Thank you for your flexibility that when things didn’t go as planned, you reinvented the story & supported Mel’s pregnancy & incorporated it on the show even if you have the option to hide it or simply keep of the show.
To all writters of the show, thank you for telling your story with strong message of self acceptance, love & forgiveness wrapped in one liner dark humor.
Cheers to season 3!
