If we thought Widow Mercedes (Dani Kind) was starting to lose it before, last week’s episode of Wynonna Earp proved the craziness is just getting started. After fighting off Waverly (Dominique Provost-Chalkley) and Nicole (Katherine Barrell), and almost fatally wounding the officer, Mercedes tried to brutally get information out of Sheriff Nedley (Greg Lawson). Thankfully, Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and Doc (Tim Rozon) were able to put a stop to her, and by episode’s end captured the Widow and brought her back to Black Badge.
Despite looking a lot like Hannibal Lecter at the end of the episode, we’re guessing that isn’t the last trouble Mercedes will be stirring up in Purgatory. In part two of our interview with Dani Kind, The TV Junkies discuss with her what it was like shooting that fight scene, the challenges of her wardrobe this season and filming those scenes where Mercedes really starts to lose it. She also touches on the fact that this is her second project that she’s worked on with Barrell, as the two also costar on CBC’s Workin’ Moms.
The TV Junkies: Let’s discuss that crazy fight scene.
Dani Kind: I couldn’t believe I got to do that with Dom and Kat. I was in that crazy outfit and it was just so great. Our stunt coordinator Steve [McMichael] is so great. They did a rehearsal the day before we shot it with Kat and Dom. Then on the day it was like the whole team rolled in and they took such great care of us. After we were done I was like ‘I want to fight everyone! I want to smash things! I want to blow things up!’ It was so fun.
TTVJ: But not with those gloves!
DK: Not with those god damn gloves! I hate them so much! [laughs]
TTVJ: Did you burn them after you wrapped?
DK: I ripped them off. Every time they called ‘cut!’ I would rip them off!
TTVJ: How come you had to wear the big butt and Meghan [Heffern] sort of got out of wearing it?
DK: She wore it for a little bit and then she’s just in these beautiful dresses. Let’s be fair though, she’s way prettier than me regularly, so I was like ‘fair enough. Let’s feature that beautiful face of Meghan Heffern.’
TTVJ: This now marks two different shows where your character has it out for Kat Barrell. What do you have against her? She’s a very lovely person, Dani.
DK: She wrote me the sweetest card when we wrapped Wynonna about how we got to work together on two different shows, and how fun it is to hate each other. On Wynonna my character doesn’t have a lot of love for her, unfortunately. On Workin’ Moms I think Anne is so hard on Alicia because she is envious in some kind of way of how she is a mother. Kat is so great though!
TTVJ: Admittedly, Anne hating on Alicia is one of my favorite things about Workin’ Moms.
DK: Me too! Watching Kat’s face fall every time too.
TTVJ: She does that wounded puppy dog look very well.
DK: Very, very well. I feel like that is how she sleeps at night. That’s what her face looks like.
TTVJ: She has resting puppy dog face.
DK: Exactly! [laughs] Kat Barrell: resting puppy dog face. She’s so good in this season of Workin’ Moms it’s just crazy. She gets to do so much more stuff and she’s just more of a presence. She’s just so funny.
TTVJ: At the end of Episode 210, Mercedes is in pretty bad shape, having been shot again by Peacemaker. Can you give us any hints as to her status heading into the final two episodes?
DK: She becomes even more decrepit. Her body is decaying and her body is just falling apart. She is not in a good mood.
TTVJ: You wouldn’t be either if you looked like that!
TTVJ: Mercedes went a little mad, and really laid into Nedley in Episode 210, trying to get information out of him. Had you ever shot anything like that? What was it like being so unhinged?
DK: To be honest that’s my most favorite stuff to do. In some weird way that’s the Shakespeare actor’s dream, where you get something that’s so psycho all you can do is just go with it. We shot that and it was so so so cold. I know everybody says it, but it was freezing in that barn and so cold that day. We shot it so many times and in that barn all day. I just felt like all the elements were enabling me to be crazier and crazier — the cold, the wardrobe and Greg was so great to work off. That’s my most favorite stuff. Any time someone is like ‘let’s just let Dani go crazy on this one,’ and I’m like ‘OK!’ It was so fun!
