With the holidays right around the corner, Workin’ Moms has decided to gift us all with an early present. In a special episode, airing Tuesday night at 9:30 p.m. on CBC, the comedy will flash back to 2005 and show viewers what a 25-year-old, single, workaholic Kate (Catherine Reitman) and friend Anne (Dani Kind) were really like. The episode, written and directed by Reitman, will focus on the ladies, showing them on the eve of Anne’s impending marriage. Anne is having a case of last minute doubts, while best friend Kate makes it clear that she wants nothing to do with marriage, choosing instead to attend the wedding with a ‘separated man.’
“Something we got a lot of love for last season was this extraordinary friendship between Kate and Anne,” Reitman recently told The TV Junkies. She said the audience’s love for the characters and learning more about that relationship is where the idea for this episode came from. “I wanted this prequel to go back 10 years, when Kate and Anne are right out of university and super entitled, super confident and have a lot to say without a lot of wisdom to back it up,” she explained.
Reitman said seeing Kate and Anne before they were “our Kate and Anne”, will give insight into a relationship and friendship that “let’s be honest, doesn’t actually exist that much once you have kids and return to work.” She went on to elaborate that it was important for character development and understanding because “that kind of core friendship that we relate to so much in our university days, and pre-kids days when you had that time for it, is the root for” Kate.
In fact, those days were exactly what the writers were trying to tap into back when they were discovering and trying to flesh out the characters. “In the first season in the writers’ room we always said ‘who was Kate before this baby? Who was Anne before these kids?’” Reitman said. By asking those questions, and then actually seeing it in this flashback episode, Reitman said “it helps us understand them and how they operate with this new challenge of children.”
Not only will viewers get a chance to learn more about Kate and Anne’s relationship, but they’ll also see more of their mothers. Mimi Kuzyk returns as Kate’s often disapproving mother Eleanor, along with guest star Jann Arden as Anne’s mother Jane. “Catherine sent me a text message one day and was like ‘just want to let you know Anne’s mother might be Jann Arden.’ I lost my goddamn mind,” Kind told us earlier this year. Kind said she’s a huge fan of Arden’s and loved the experience. She had nothing but praise for her on screen mother, telling us that Arden “really knocked it out of the park, and I can’t wait for people to see.”
While most of the episode is a blast to the past and will be lots of fun for viewers, Workin’ Moms does what it does best and keeps these women feeling real and relatable. Of course, that sometimes mean they aren’t always shown in the best light. “It’s an episode where we get to see exactly how reckless Kate and Anne can be,” previewed Reitman. She also said that this episode will have ramifications in the future that will play out over the course of Season 2. “We set up little beats that are going to be strung throughout the season, and things Anne will be dealing with mid and end season,” said Reitman.
What exactly she’s referring to is anyone’s guess, meaning viewers will have to tune in and find out for themselves. Regardless, one thing is for certain, this Workin’ Moms flashback episode is a real treat and a must watch, especially for fans as eager as we are for the January 9 Season 2 premiere!
