Hi there, Vagrants! How are we all doing? Are we rested? Are we hydrated? The first thing I want to do is make sure you’re taking care of yourselves. When Bridget and I spoke about how to handle this week’s finale recap, she so kindly left it up to me to decide whether we would publish a full piece. This week (this month, this lifetime of mine) has been long and it’s been hard, and my attention has been on the movement and on the fight. So unfortunately, that means no full recap. However, I did want to take a brief moment to say a few things to this cast and crew as well as to put focus where I believe it is necessary right now — on Black Lives Matter.
I love genre television. It’s historically been one of the few places on television where I’ve been able to see myself. This season of Vagrant Queen has been fun and joyous and heartbreaking and timely and all of the things I love about genre. Add to that a kickass Black female lead and you’ve got my perfect show. Thank you to the entire cast and crew and creators for pouring your hearts into this season. More than that, thank you for using your platforms and your voices on social media to make it clear where you stand on issues of racism and violence. I see you and I appreciate you. I hope with my whole heart that this isn’t the end for Elida, Amae, and Isaac, and that we get to follow them on even more space adventures. I mean, EMIDA RISE, am I right?!
The fight we’re in right now isn’t so dissimilar from the fights against installed institutions on Vagrant Queen and many other genre shows. It’s going to take every single one of us to get uncomfortable and confront the systemic racism that has flowed freely through the veins of the U.S. since well before its establishment. I believe we can effect change. I have to. It’s the only way I can find the strength to get out of bed and face the world in this Black body. Below is a link to some resources you can utilize, save, and share. And a bit of shameless self-promotion, a note I wrote about how personal this fight is.
Thank you for reading these recaps all season and I hope to see y’all in our own galaxy some time soon. Be well, Vagrants.
