The Social co-host “shuts up” in S2

This time last year, Melissa Grelo was keeping a pretty big secret. As The Social personality prepped to launch the new show on a national level alongside her co-hosts and worked overtime to help sort out all of the usual tweaks that come with such a debut, she already knew what the rest of Canada would learn in the coming weeks: that she was going to have to leave the show for a maternity leave thanks to her first pregnancy.

“I was sort of nurturing two babies at once if you will because my emotions were being pulled two separate ways,” Grelo tells The TV Junkies. “I was giving my all to the show and at the same time thinking, ‘Oh my gosh I can’t start thinking about not being here.'”

Fast forward a year to the launch of The Social Season 2 and Grelo is the first to reveal that her pregnancy and the subsequent birth of her daughter Marquesa was a blessing in disguise. Not only did it open up a whole new world of viewers for her to connect with (and a kick-ass digital scrapbook for her daughter), but it allowed her to reveal a personal side that otherwise might not have existed on that platform. Heading into Season 2, the experience has now taught her to just “shut up” once in a while too, and soak in someone else’s experience rather than share an unintentionally uninformed opinion.

“The biggest lesson I learned in this journey was until you walk a mile in someone’s shoes, you gotta just keep your mouth shut about making a judgement call or having an opinion because you just don’t always know,” she explains. “As soon as I had my daughter and was preparing mentally and physically to come back to work, I realized, how on earth does any woman do this without the support of a thousand people around her? Now as we launch Season 2, I thought I knew everything, but I have to just shut up because this is hard. It’s about being softer and gentler in my approach, which is something that maybe historically I would have been speaking out of turn about. That’s the biggest revelation that I’ve had in this whole journey so far.”

That’s not to say there won’t be plenty of the fun banter, audience interaction and reactionary stories that made Season 1 of this series such a Canadian staple. Grelo promises that while the news junkie in her is excited to cover more hardcore stories and how they affect Canadians, she’s also looking forward to lots of celebrity interviews and time with her co-hosts.

“My co-hosts are brilliant and they all come with such unique perspectives on things that I want to talk about,” she wraps. “Some harder news stories, but how they affect you, your family and how the social media landscape affects it as well. That’s maybe the next frontier. We’ve done that in Season 1 but I’d love for more of it in Season 2. Oh and I’m also looking forward to more celebrity interviews. It’s the ying and yang of Melissa Grelo.”

The Social, with hosts Melissa Grelo, Traci Melchor, Cynthia Loyst and Lainey Lui, returns Tuesday, Sept. 2 at 1 p.m. ET on CTV.
