There’s been a tension in the air around Callie (Maia Mitchell) and Brandon (David Lambert) on The Fosters for three seasons now and Monday night all that sexual tension finally boiled over. Certain that her adoption would never become a reality, Callie and Brandon finally gave in to their feelings and slept together. “Maia and I were focused on really hitting that high point in this time for Brandon and Callie, and really showing that release and all the time and tension that’s been building and building,” Lambert told reporters on a conference call. “It was really important for us to get that right,” he said.
While this may have been a moment that many Brallie shippers have been waiting for, the repercussions moving forward could be very hard to deal with. It’s a situation Brandon is not used to being in, one where he cannot protect Callie from what’s to come. “This is by far the hardest thing Brandon’s had to deal with,” explained Lambert. The fact that Callie sealed both of their fates in order to save Rita may cause some discord amongst the couple as well. “Ultimately Brandon has to respect that and he does care for Callie. At the end of the day he’s going to do his best to be there for her and support her. It was her decision to do that and he’s going to have to be OK with that eventually,” said Lambert.
So even though Callie may have thought protecting Rita would put a halt to Stef and Lena’s adoption of her, the midseason finale does see that process moving forward. Does that mean more secret keeping for Brandon and Callie? ““That’s really what they are going to have to figure out in the finale,” said Lambert. It’s one that fans won’t have to wait long to find the answer out to either as he said that “we will see very soon the conversation, because there will be one, about this very thing.” Lambert also added that “it’s an interesting task, one I think they were trying to avoid the whole time and now it’s sort of staring them right in the face.”
Regardless of the outcome, one thing is for certain, Brandon and Callie inspire a passion in fans of The Fosters like no other couple on the show. Lambert attributes Brallie shippers’ passion to the fact that “there’s always that romantic feeling when two people can’t be together. There’s that ‘grass is greener on the other side,’ or unrequited love thing and that epitomizes what Brandon and Callie have become,” he said. While sleeping together is “a place they shouldn’t have gone yet they couldn’t help it,” Lambert believes that the “whole idea appeals to people because you’re acting on emotions you shouldn’t necessarily act on.”
Rooting for the underdog and wanting that unrequited love to happen is exactly what keeps Brallie fans coming back for more he said. “All those qualities are exactly what Brandon and Callie have had to go through and will continue to go through. There’s something attractive about that subconsciously for us. It’s an interesting dynamic for people to watch and they like to watch it and want to know ultimately what’s going to happen to them,” Lambert said.
