The long awaited Season 3 premiere of The 100 is almost upon us. For many fans it’s been a long, long hiatus since we last saw Clarke (Eliza Griffin), Bellamy (Bob Morley) and the others finally take down Mt. Weather. For others, you may have recently caught up on Seasons 1 and 2 by bingeing them on Netflix–whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain: Thursday, Jan. 21 at 9 p.m. can’t get here soon enough!
When we do rejoin the gang in Season 3, it’s been about three months since the events of Mt. Weather and that Season 2 finale. Clarke is still off on her own, in places unknown to everyone from the Ark. Both she and Bellamy, as well as everyone else, are still dealing with everything that has happened and how they got to this place. The Arkers do luckily still have peace with the 12 Clan coalition and are abiding by those rules at the moment.
After checking out the first few episodes of Season 3, I figured I should share the wealth with fellow fans eagerly anticipating the show’s return. There’s countless reasons why fans should be excited, but I’ve highlighted nine of the major ones below. As always, this isn’t about ruining anyone’s viewing experience–because trust me, you won’t want to be spoiled for this premiere–but it’s more about giving teases into what happens and building upon those excitement levels. So if you’re having trouble waiting, here’s a few tidbits I can offer up to help tide you over until the premiere.
The women continue to kick ass
OK, this is The 100 and one thing we can always trust about this show is that the females are strong, smart, cunning, powerful and never backing down from anyone. It’s one of the things I absolutely love most about the show, and a trend that not only continues in Season 3, but we are actually introduced to even more kick ass women. At the same time, the ones we know and love, like Octavia (Maria Avgeropoulos), somehow get even more badass. I know it’s been said time and again with regards to The 100, but it bears saying once more:
The world is bigger than ever
Going into a third season has allowed creator Jason Rothenberg and company to expand upon an already fascinating world, introducing new clans, new enemies and doing so on an even bigger scale. This world of The 100 just feels so much larger than the one we’ve been dealing with in the past two seasons, and I can’t wait to learn and see more of it. It’s so much bigger in fact there were more than a few Game of Thrones-worthy moments.
New characters to love
… and to hate! Going right along with that bigger world means that viewers will be introduced to many new characters this season. Some are really great and I can’t wait to learn more about them, while others I already can’t stand and know they will be stirring up all kinds of trouble in the future.
Ever since Lexa (Alycia Debnam-Carey) betrayed Clarke at Mt. Weather we have known that when they eventually met again things were going to be tense (to say the least). If what we saw in the Season 3 trailer was any indication, it seems that it’s just about what we would expect–with Clarke holding a knife to Lexa’s throat. Factor in those rumours about Clarke having a new love interest and as with everything else, the stakes have never been higher for Clexa’s inevitable reunion.
From what I’ve seen so far, music plays a major role in Season 3. By now most fans have probably checked out the Shawn Mendes clip from an upcoming episode, as the “Stitches” singer briefly joins the show, but that’s not the only major musical moment from the episodes I’ve seen. There’s one moment in the premiere in particular that helps offer up a far too rare, light-hearted moment of happiness that I particularly enjoyed.
So it may have only been three months since the Season 2 finale, but there have been some HUGE changes. The events of last season are weighing heavily on everyone’s head, and whether or not they like it, they are affected by them emotionally, physically, romantically and politically. This all means major, major changes for our Arkers, who by the way are now known as Skaikru, and that’s because …
Everyone is a grounder
Rothenberg has said that everyone is now a Grounder, and that’s evident immediately in Season 3. Skaikru is now currently in an alliance with the 12 Clan coalition, and part of being in that alliance will force Abby (Paige Turco), Kane (Henry Ian Cusick), and everyone else’s hand at some point.
Peace never lasts long
If we’ve learned anything it’s that peace never lasts long, especially in the world of The 100. While there may be a truce between Skaikru and the 12 Clans it’s easy to think, especially after watching the trailer, that it’s not likely to last very long. That’s a very good inclination to have and people are going to be forced to pick sides very early on in Season 3, because the peace and calm is short-lived. But let’s be honest, if it wasn’t what fun would that be?
Intensity is at an all-time high
So you thought it was bad when the people at Mt. Weather wanted to drain everyone’s bone marrow did you? Well if you can imagine, the threats in Season 3 are even greater than some of those we’ve seen in the past. While Clarke and the others have always had to worry about threats from the outside, as Kane alludes to in the trailer, the true threats may be coming from within, meaning the intensity from week to week is going to be at an all-time high!
So prepare yourselves, get ready and hold on tight The 100 fans, and until the Season 3 premiere, may we meet again …
