Supernatural: The Suit Evolution of Sam and Dean

We’re about halfway through Supernatural’s Season 11 and there are a lot of pots on the fire right now. Castiel (Misha Collins) is harbouring a certain fugitive from Hell, Dean (Jensen Ackles) is habouring an illicit crush on God’s little sis and said twisted sister is still at large. This is the point in most Supernatural seasons when the boys say, “Well, there’s nothing much we can do about [insert Big Bad here] for the moment, so let’s just hunt to take our minds off things,” in somewhat the same way normal people say, “Let’s drive up to the cottage this weekend and getaway from the rat race.”

So I thought I’d take a moment to talk about a theme that has been running through the show since its inception, but particularly caught my eye in Episode 12, “Don’t You Forget About Me.” No, I’m not referring to role of female characters in Supernatural (again) or the reasons why I think Claire Novak (Kathryn Newton) should have her own spin-off (that’s for another longer post). I’m here to talk to you about suits.

As part of their job as hunters of the occult and the monstrous, Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester occasionally don the trappings of various government agents. Sometimes that involves wearing actual uniforms, but it usually involves a pair of sharp suits. As you’ll see in the following gallery, our boys weren’t always the sharp dressers they are today. There was a time when they wore their monkey suits with a marked disdain.

What do you think of the style evolution of the Winchester Brothers? Let us know in the comments!

Supernatural airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on the CW.
