After waaaaaayyy too long of a hiatus #Droughtlander has FINALLY come to an end! That’s right, Season 2 of Outlander is upon us. This week’s episode, “Through The Looking Glass,” began with us scratching our heads, wondering how Claire got back to 1948 with Frank, and then flipped over to where we left off last season, giving us a peek into what this season is going to look like with Claire and Jamie in France.
Since we here at The TV Junkies are just as excited as everyone else by Outlander‘s return, we thought it’d be fun to recap everything that went down in the premiere episode, as well as add our thoughts about what’s going on. We don’t know yet if these will be a weekly deal–honestly, they can be a little time consuming–so let us know if you enjoy them and we’ll see how they go.
So without further ado, let’s get started!
Picking Up Where We Left Off Last Season…
Or not? Why is Claire waking up in the grass next to the stones? Anyone else double check to make sure they were watching the right episode or was that just me? What did we miss?
Why is she so upset? What is she desperately looking for in the grass? It can’t possibly just be this ring can it?
I guess she didn’t find what she was looking for. What is going on?
I’m Here For A Reason
OK, she’s got herself together again, she looks like she’s on a mission now.
Excuse me m’am, are you lost?
“What year is it?” – Not exactly what you’d expect an oddly dressed woman to ask you in the middle of nowhere.
“Who won the Battle of Cullodin? TELL ME!!” Apparently Claire is trying to figure out if history has changed. At least I think that’s what she’s trying to do. Nope, I still have no idea what’s going on.
I guess “The English” wasn’t the answer she wanted to hear?
Did you catch the addition of the french language in the opening song? Nice touch.
Off To The Hospital
So she’s back in Frank’s time again, maybe a few years later. But how did we get here again?
The face of a man about to meet his wife who’s been missing for 3 years…..TERRIFIED!!
“I’m back” – Doesn’t she look happy about it?
And I’m terrified of you. Probably not the reaction Frank was expecting when he tried to touch his wife.
“I’m just happy that you’re back” – Really? You don’t want to know where she’s been all this time?
“I’m going to need some clothes” – Do you think?
Ah the paparazzi, always showing up where they’re least wanted.
Rev Wakefield And Mrs. Graham
If you remember Mrs. Graham is the one that predicted Claire’s “love of two men” in the first season. Surely she’ll believe Claire’s story and understand her new found obsession with Scottish history.
“It’s been a week since she’s been back Frank, surely you deserve an explanation.” – OK seriously, how could Frank have just sat around for a week and not asked for some type of explanation?
I mean, maybe she was kidnapped by fairies? Don’t you want to know Frank?
Mrs. Graham Understands
“Whenever you talk about him you always mention his sense of humour, his smile, and his hair.” – Only Jamie’s hair could bring on that amazing smile.
“I just need to know if he died in that war.” – So do we Claire, SO DO WE!
“Don’t spend the rest of your days chasing a ghost.” – Ah Mrs. Graham, always the voice of reason.
I Think It’s Time We Talked
“I need to tell you, at my own pace, what happened to me while I was gone.”
It’s a lot to take in isn’t it Frank? “It’s quite the leap of faith,” believing this crazy story.
Mic. Drop. – There’s more!
I’m pregnant! I’m carrying another man’s child.
Let’s just take a moment to marvel at Tobias Menzies’ amazing acting in this scene and his killer facial expressions. Here we have surprised Frank.
Next we have hurt Frank.
Then we have pissed off Frank.
And finally, we have Black Jack Frank–you can’t deny that this immediately makes you think about Black Jack’s evilness.
Apparently when Frank get’s pissed off he breaks things that aren’t his. Good to know.
A Blessing In Disguise?
It turns out Frank is sterile. He didn’t know before Claire left, but now that she’s back maybe her being pregnant with another man’s child could be a good thing. Only Rev. Wakefield could find positivity in this crazy situation.
He wants to be a family. He wants to be this baby’s father. But in order for that to happen Claire has to stop doing her research, she has to let Jaimie go.
“He made me promise that I would let him go.” – How can she just let him go? There has to be a way for her to get back to him. I’m not willing to accept that she’s back with Frank forever.
No!! Don’t take off the ring! It can’t be over, it can’t be…
Frank is making sure that it’s over. He’s making sure that she’s moving on.
To Harvard We Go
Have to admit I never expected to see Claire on an airplane anytime in the near future.
Just as Claire is stepping off the place to take Frank’s hand we switch back to where we left off last season. Boy was I happy to see Jaimie again.
Look at the difference in Claire’s face. She just glows when she’s with Jamie.
The chemistry that these two have is just amazing. You can’t deny it.
“France, reeks of frogs.” – How can you not love Murtagh?
This scene broke my heart to watch. The intense pain that Jamie must still be feeling and how he manages to hide it from everyone. “Sometimes I feel his touch, like he’s here.” Ugh, I can’t even imagine.
“We can infiltrate the Jacobite movement, get close to the key players.”
“You certainly have high opinion of what a crippled Highlander and a pregnant English woman can accomplish.” – That’s exactly what we were thinking Jamie, how would that even be possible? But Claire is determined. She will find a way.
Murtagh is not impressed that they aren’t telling him everything. But, because he’s a way better person than I am, he’s willing to go along with it all once they promise to tell him everything at the proper time.
And when is the proper time Jamie? “I don’t know Sassenach, you’re the one from the future.”
Shameless pouty face picture of Jamie that couldn’t be left out of this recap…
“What is the fire that burns within you? Why the sudden interest in politics Jamie?”
“Courtesy of the British Army”
Don’t worry Jared, shirtless Jamie would convince me to do anything too.
The look on every woman’s face after seeing Jamie without his shirt on….
My Husband’s Working, What Kind Of Trouble Can I Get Myself Into
Why are they trying to hide these people with that rather familiar looking rash?
I’m a healer, I can help. Actually this one’s already dead…
You know when royalty walks in there’s going to be trouble. The Compte de Saint Germain enters the scene and he is adamant that no one needs to know about the sick people on his ship.
Of course Claire will have nothing of that. She knows that it’s smallpox and that something needs to be done about it.
Even Jamie tries to convince Claire to let it go but it’s too late. The word is out that the Compte’s boat had smallpox on it so it needs to be destroyed.
“You will pay for this, the both of you.” – Apparently the Compte is not a forgiving man. You know this is going to come back on Claire and Jamie sometime in the future.
“The Compte will not forget what happened. You’ve made an enemy here today.”
“Another country, another enemy. Life with you is never dull sassenach.”
