Killjoys’ Mayko Nguyen On That Surprising Delle Seyah Twist

Alright, show of hands everybody, who didn’t see the Killjoys’ ending with a pregnant Delle Seyah coming? If your hand is up, you’re probably not alone. After a tense back and forth relationship with Gander (Ted Atherton) all season, Delle Seyah (Mayko Nguyen) was kidnapped by Aneela’s (Hannah John-Kamen) right hand man and taken away to be impregnated. It still remains a mystery as to what his true plans are with the former member of the Nine, but we’re guessing Aneela will be none too happy about Delle Seyah being taken away from her, especially after the pair woke up happily in bed together to begin the episode.
As it turns out, Delle Seyah’s pregnancy was written into the plot for Season 3 given that Nguyen was actually pregnant during shooting. Showrunner Michelle Lovretta and her team of writers adjusted the story, and where they are now headed with it is anyone’s guess, but you can be certain we’re eagerly awaiting the answers. Nguyen recently spoke exclusively to The TV Junkies about her pregnancy, previews what Gander has up his sleeve and why she believes Aneela won’t stop until she finds Delle Seyah.
The TV Junkies: At the end of Episode 306 it’s revealed that Delle Seyah is pregnant! I take it this was due to your own real life pregnancy?
Mayko Nguyen: When I found out that I was pregnant I told them a month before we started shooting. They were amazing and the show is just incredible. I was scared I was going to lose the contract and Delle Seyah wasn’t going to come back. They were so great though, and I think the intention was that they were just going to hide it. If you go back to the first episodes, everything is shot above my waist and with body doubles. But I actually got really big and really fast so we couldn’t hide it, but there was an opportunity for an interesting storyline. They asked if I was OK incorporating the pregnancy and I thought it was great.

TTVJ: I have to say I was surprised, thinking you were just wearing some really nice flowing Hullen robes.
MN: I love Delle Seyah’s wardrobe, but in past years she’s always cinched at the waist. I’m usually quite uncomfortable in her clothes because it’s always quite tight with these huge bands around my waist. This year it was the complete opposite, and it’s all incredibly drapey. They were also trying to differentiate between Delle Seyah as Hullen versus old Delle Seyah. So that switch in the look was also timely, but we definitely needed to cover up.
TTVJ: That’s exactly what I thought it was. She was also wearing her hair down and I just thought it was a new look. It totally worked on me.
MN: [laughs] Yeah and she has less makeup. That is awesome to hear though.
TTVJ: Can you give us any hints as to what is happening to Delle Seyah?
MN: I can’t say too much, but Gander’s taken her away to impregnate her. It’s a huge spoiler if I tell any more. I’m sorry.

TTVJ: Will we see Aneela work to get to her or try to find where she is at all?
MN: Oh yes, for sure! Aneela and Delle Seyah come back together again and become even tighter.
TTVJ: Because we did see the start of a romance between Aneela and Delle Seyah. Is that going to continue at all?
MN: Yes, it does. From Delle Seyah’s vantage point, it doesn’t feel like just a lust thing. I think she gravitates towards Aneela because she’s also a very lonely person. That’s where her attitude comes from, it’s protective and they find something in each other that allows them to be a bit more real. There is a relationship that grows there, but what I like is that it’s not purely sexual.
TTVJ: But it doesn’t hurt that she also looks like Dutch, who she always had a crush on.
MN: Of course! [laughs]

Killjoys airs Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on Syfy and Space.
It’s nice to see Mayko Nguyen back and even getting a bigger role to play it would appear. I’ve enjoyed her since all the way back to her ReGenesis days. Syfy appears pretty flexible working with pregnancy schedules. At least in two recent cases. Not sure what the norm is.
“TTVJ: I have to say I was surprised, thinking you were just wearing some really nice flowing Hullen robes.”
Surprised? Really? Her first appearance in Season 3 and I said she’s either pregnant or just recently had a baby. Some women don’t show pregnancy at all in their face but the weight gain on those who do is unmistakable. Combined with the high waisted costumes and careful shooting angles = pregnant.
Cool that they wrote this into the story. IMHO that always works better than trying to hide a woman being pregnant. When Tiffani Thiessen was pregnant for most of a season of “White Collar” her character went away on a business trip, making only a few appearances showing only head and shoulders. Could still tell from her face. In a bit of a twist, the series ended with her character announcing she’s pregnant. Dunno why they didn’t just write it into the show in ‘real time’.
For “Bones” both of Emily Deschanel’s pregnancies were written into the show. At the end of the 11th and through the short 12th and final season she was looking pregnant again but if she was, a tight lid has been kept on the news. After each of her two she was able to shed the baby weight quite well.
I thought something was wrong when there were no close-up or shooting her all body. In addition, the weight gain but I have never thought it was because of a pregnancy.
I am glad for MN now we will see Selle Seyah proprely.
Got to agree with you Gregg, I also immediately figured that Nguyen must be pregnant when the season started. Her look was just so different, her wardrobe changed and one could notice that the camera took care to only show her from certain angles (as opposed to the former episodes). Well hope things turn out well for her in any case.
I have to say I loved the first two seasons of Killjoys but something feels wrong with season 3 in my humble opinion. I have to confess that I greatly dislike the new team member that does not really fit well into Dutch’s team and that has changed the great dynamic it had. Also some scenes now feel very forced compared to the “ease” of the previous seasons where one has the distinct feeling the three have a lot of fun shooting this series. As I like the show I hope things will get better. Not sure if any of you guys feel the same way.
Wow, I am so happy that Dell Seyah play an important role for season 3.
But I really want to know about the pregnancy in the show. Can’t wait for Friday episode.
