Thankfully for Killjoys fans it’s almost time to head back to the Quad! The science fiction adventure series returns to Syfy and Space Channel on Friday, July 1 at 9 p.m. in a premiere that will find Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and Johnny (Aaron Ashmore) trying to rescue D’avin (Luke MacFarlane). If you’ll recall the Season 1 finale saw D’avin wake up on the mysterious moon Arkyn, seemingly kidnapped by Dutch’s mysterious childhood mentor Khlyen (Rob Stewart).
Thanks to our visit to set earlier this year, we’re already aware of a few of the twists and turns to come, but we can’t help but want more! In an exclusive interview with The TV Junkies, John-Kamen previewed Dutch’s journey this year, the team’s focus on getting D’avin back and discussed her confusing relationship with Khlyen. She also previews the trio’s upcoming battle with the Reclamation Apprehension Coalition (RAC) this season that is sure to test their loyalties and faith.
The TV Junkies: Where do things pick up in Season 2? Is Dutch still singularly focused on finding D’avin?
Hannah John-Kamen: Absolutely. With the way we ended in Season 1 our whole focus, and first and foremost mission, is to get D’avin back. We need to find him and be a team again.
TTVJ: It seems like our trio of killjoys are really going to be focused on the RAC this season. Can you preview anything about the battle they have in front of them there?
HJK: What’s so interesting this season with the RAC is that they start to doubt everything they have stood for, which is the warrant is all. Take no sides. Take no bribes. When you’ve been working for a corrupt company that’s actually behind the destruction at Old Town, then there’s definitely a determination to find out and get to the bottom of it. They also just want to figure out for themselves who they have been working for all this time.
TTVJ: Assuming they eventually do find D’avin, what will Dutch and D’avin’s relationship look like in Season 2?
HJK: There’s definitely been progress and a step forward from what happened last season in Episode 7 and their huge fight. With Dutch and D’avin their focus is to get their friendship back and be a team again. Throughout the season she finds comfort in a character, but the most important thing is to have that friendship back with D’avin.
TTVJ: Obviously at the heart of the show is the friendship between Dutch and Johnny. How are things between those two and are they affected at all by what’s happened to D’avin?
HJK: There’s nothing specifically toward D’avin, but as far as Dutch and John’s relationship this season, Johnny needs to spread his wings and fly and do his own thing. In order to do that he doesn’t want to hurt Dutch though. There’s a darker way that Johnny handles things this season which does affect their relationship and rattles it.
TTVJ: When we visited set Rob Stewart said everything Khlyen does is out of love for Dutch. Do you think there’s a truth to that and could Dutch ever see it that way?
HJK: Khlyen and Dutch’s relationship is so confusing and complicated. From Season 1 you have hints of Khlyen being tentative and protective and showing a gentle side of him, especially in the flashback when Dutch was a young child in the harem and he saves her. For Dutch that has always been in her mind as well, that there is this side of Khlyen.
That’s why I think it’s so damaging and confusing when he has this other side where he’s made her become a killer. He has betrayed her. How do you get back from that? That’s why Dutch has this huge guard up. She finds it hard to trust because of this complicated, conflicted, if you call it love that Khlyen has showed. I think we’ll see more of an explanation on Khlyen’s side this season on why he’s done what he’s done.
TTVJ: We really saw Season 1 get into some of the social and religious issues. Will those still be aspects in the story in Season 2?
HJK: Yes! In Season 2 we will definitely be visiting Alvis at the monastery and we will see religiously how it will link up to all the new discoveries we’re finding out about the world, the RAC and Arkyn. It’s going to be very interesting.
TTVJ: When we last saw Old Town things weren’t looking so good. Can you share anything about how Old Town and the people who stayed behind are doing or if Dutch and her gang are going to be trying to go back there?
HJK: The poor Westerlands! We will be going back. It’s our home! We definitely will be going back and it’ll be interesting to see the state of Old Town and then the Old Towners, also socially what happens and how they can be controlled. That’s all I’ll say.
TTVJ: Michelle Lovretta has said she’d like to see Dutch get to have some fun. Can we expect some fun in Season 2?
HJK: Dutch definitely this season has so much fun, particularly with her undercover looks that she gets to play with. Also there’s a lot of fun with the fights. There’s a lot more fighting and so much more action.
What do you think will happen in Season 2? What are you most looking forward to? Sound off in the comments below!
