John Jaqobis (Aaron Ashmore) is a changed man. At the end of last season on Killjoys, John’s girlfriend Pawter Simms (Sarah Power) was murdered and he avenged her death by shooting Delle Seyah (Mayko Nguyen). Since then, he’s been lying low, having taken off from Dutch (Hannah John-Kamen) and D’avin (Luke MacFarlane) with Clara (Stephanie Leonidas). Season 3 of the Syfy and Space thriller returns on Friday, June 30 at 8 p.m. and promises a darker Johnny than we’ve seen in the past.
Thanks to Aneela (John-Kamen), there’s a war looming over the J Star System and the trio of space bounty hunters must assemble their own army to face off against Dutch’s doppelganger as she heads towards them. In the season premiere episode, “Boondoggie,” Johnny must begin a desperate hunt for Clara after she goes missing in Rat City, a world filled with Hackmods, humans with cybernetic implants. To get a better idea of what to expect from the youngest Jaqobis brother, The TV Junkies spoke exclusively with Ashmore about John’s mindset at the start of the season, the status of some of the show’s core relationships and just how dangerous Aneela really is.
The TV Junkies: When we last saw Johnny he was headed off on his own after shooting Delle Seyah. Where do things open up for him in Season 3?
Aaron Ashmore: He and Clara are on the run in a part of the galaxy that was unspecified. They are chasing down repos and slavers and they’ve immersed themselves in Clara’s Hackmod world. As per usual, there’s plenty of adventure that ensues.
TTVJ: Obviously losing Pawter is going to be something that won’t easily go away for John. How will Pawter’s death still be affecting him this year?
AA: That was something that was important to me, to not just slough that off and move on and John is back to being John, and not really seeing the impact of that. Of course you also don’t want it to be a total bummer and see him dragged into depression, but I think a little of John’s shine has worn off this year. He still has his sense of humor and is still John, but there’s just a little bit of a darker element to him. Hopefully that plays because you go through all these traumatic experiences and it only makes sense they’ll screw you up a little bit.
TTVJ: Last season Dutch and Johnny went through some rough patches, and even though they are separated from one another to start this season, their relationship seems stronger. What will we see from that friendship this year? Will it be more united than last season?
AA: They are definitely a united front and think their relationship is strong, but of course there’s going to be some bumps along the way and disagreements between friends. However, I think this year is really about Dutch and D’av’s relationship. We see a lot more of the two of them developing their friendship and relationship within the team because John is gone.
TTVJ: Speaking of D’avin, one relationship I really love that took a bit of a backseat last season was the one between the Jaqobis brothers. What’s happening with D’avin and Johnny this season?
AA: We have a few moments where we get to see them goof around together and have a heart to heart at a certain point, but we’re going to war so some of the relationships aren’t taking the front seat. We see them interacting, but I wouldn’t say it’s a huge focus of the season.
TTVJ: Aneela seems to be shaping up as the Big Bad for this season. Can you give us any hints as to what our team is truly up against in this war with her?
AA: Well Bridget, they are in trouble! They are in big, big trouble. Aneela has a whole armada, and a whole group of Hullen behind her, and we know them to be pretty much indestructable. In the beginning of the season it’s just the Killjoys, Turin, Fancy, Pree and that’s it. The big part of Season 3 is getting people together from these different factions to fight this war. That’s really what a majority of the season is about is trying to get us this army. We’re in very big trouble, Bridget, very big trouble!
TTVJ: I know we’re not supposed to like Aneela, but everything I see I get excited. I think it’s partially excitement over getting to see Hannah play her.
AA: Hannah is a star and so amazing. Aneela is so far from Hannah and Hannah makes these very strong choices and it’s phenomenal to see it happen. Because the Aneela storyline is so separate, I didn’t get to see a lot of it being shot so now that I’ve seen it, it’s just incredible. People are going to love to hate her and that’s what you want out of a bad guy.
