While their sisterly bond on screen may have some issues that need to be worked out, things are completely different for Jann Arden and Zoie Palmer. Palmer plays Max, the younger sister who is often frustrated by older sister Jann’s (Arden) reluctance to step up and be responsible on CTV’s JANN, airing Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET. Things are far different off screen, as the pair thoroughly enjoy working with each other. “She was everything and then some of what I thought she’d be,” Arden told The TV Junkies.
Jann and Max’s relationship will be put to the test even further in this week’s episode that sees them team up to plan a 75th birthday party for their mother (Deborah Grover). Tensions rise when Jann takes over planning from Max, even blackmailing old friend (and guest star) Rick Mercer to perform at the party. However, the episode is also a significant one for Arden and Palmer, as they perform a song they wrote together.
“Mother Mine” by Arden and Palmer, is a new single that will be made available after Wednesday’s episode on all digital platforms including Spotify and iTunes. Arden says that she started writing the song on her own “because I knew we needed a song for the scene,” but soon decided to bring in Palmer, who she calls “a very gifted actor.” Arden explained to us that “I thought this was a song the sisters sing to their mom, so I said to Zoie ‘do you have any interest being involved lyrically?’” Arden said she saw Palmer sing in so many things from Instant Star to even her recent guest starring turn on Wynonna Earp, that she actually “thought she was a songwriter.”
For her part, Palmer jumped at the chance to work on the song with Arden and “it turned out beautifully.” While they sing together in the episode, Palmer actually “flew back to Calgary in December to record a real vocal.” Arden calls Palmer “an amazing lyricist” and says that she’s “really proud of Zoie” for her work on “Mother Mine.” In fact, Arden enjoyed the experience so much that she brought Palmer in to work on another song, one that she doesn’t sing on, but that will appear in the JANN Season 1 finale episode.
