We don’t know about you, but “Bring Your Pet to Work Day” is always one of our favorite days. That’s why we’re feeling extremely envious of Detective Charlie Hudson (John Reardon), the cop who finds himself paired up with Rex, an extraordinary former K9 dog, in Hudson & Rex. The new Citytv drama, premiering Monday, March 25 at 8 p.m. ET, is a police procedural that follows Charlie and Rex (played by a German Shepherd named Diesel vom Burgimwald), as the duo utilize Charlie’s deft police skills and Rex’s keen senses to solve crimes.
Set and filmed in St. John’s, Newfoundland, the series is based off the Austrian drama Inspector Rex and boasts a strong ensemble cast as well. Joining Reardon is Mayko Nguyen (Killjoys), Kevin Hanchard (Orphan Black), and Justin Kelly (Wynonna Earp). Reardon recently spoke to The TV Junkies about what to expect from the show this season, as well as what it was like working with his canine costar.
The TV Junkies: What was it about Hudson & Rex that really made you want to be a part of this show?
John Reardon: The big difference in this is that it involves working with a dog. That was actually a big selling feature to me. For one, I love dogs, but also thought it’d be interesting. I love buddy shows and grew up watching things like Turner and Hooch. It seemed like such a great opportunity and I’ve really enjoyed working on the show.
TTVJ: Diesel definitely isn’t your conventional costar. What’s it like working with him?
JR: I love the fact that you don’t know what’s going to happen sometimes. You never know what they are going to do in the moment, and it’s pretty fun. I also think you come up then with some really interesting and impromptu things that make it in the final cut because they feel so real. I’ve really enjoyed that aspect.
Having a dog on set is really nice too. Everyone loves the dogs and it makes the set more relaxed. We actually have 3 dogs — Diesel and his two nephews — and it’s just so fun.
TTVJ: What can you share about your character Charlie and his journey this season?
JR: He’s a detective in the St. John’s police department and recently divorced. He lives for his work, grew up reading mystery novels and has always wanted to be a detective. He meets Rex at a crime scene, his canine officer partner had been killed, and so Charlie takes him for a couple days. Those couple days turn into him basically adopting Rex. For Charlie, he’s looking for some companionship since he’s on his own. Rex fills that void for him and they work really well together.
TTVJ: Charlie is a pretty experienced detective before he partners with Rex. Any chance he gets jealous or worried about being upstaged by a dog?
JR: No, but it’s funny because in real life my 16 month old son loves Diesel. He wakes up every morning like ‘Diesel! Diesel!’ He wants to come to set to see Diesel, I’m sure me too, but it’s so cute because he loves the dogs. Puppy was one of his first words.
TTVJ: What about the rest of his team outside Rex? Can you preview the other characters?
JR: Mayko plays Sarah Truong, our forensic scientist and she analyzes everything that we find. Then Justin Kelly plays Jesse, our tech specialist and Kevin Hanchard is our boss. We all have our own role in the team and work together really well.
TTVJ: The show was shot in Newfoundland and even some during winter. What was that experience like?
JR: I loved it and it was my first time to St. Johns, but I really love the city. I think anything that shoots there St. John’s becomes a character in the show. We highlight it a lot and haven’t shied away saying where we are. We see it as an asset and really try to highlight it. There’s been moments where it’s been cold, but it creates some great stories shooting out in snow.
