The Game of Thrones Season 5 trailer finally (finally!) hit the web on Friday and it’s full of all the action, sex and political intrigue we’ve come to expect from the HBO series. There was so much packed into the two-minute trailer that there’s no way to cover it all, but we’ve done our best to highlight some of the best sequences that are going to have to hold us over until the first episode on April 12. (Plus added 19 new photos, below). Nothing says a Game of Thrones trailer like having to watch it in slow-motion to catch everything.
1. A Female on the Iron Throne?
The show picks up right where the last season ended, when Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) and Lord Varys (Conleth Hill) fled King’s Landing after Tyrion killed his father, Tywin (Charles Dance), in his chamberpot. Now Tyrion has found himself in Essos, with Varys asking him to help find a suitable replacement for little Tommen on the Iron Throne. “Good luck finding him,” Tyrion says, prompting one of the best lines of the trailer.
“Who said anything about ‘him?'”
2. Margaery feels Cersei’s wrath
Speaking of queens, Cersei (Lena Headey) is out for blood after the fallout from the Season 4 finale. If the show follows Cersei’s trajectory in the books, we’re about to see her unravel fairly quickly in the next 10 episodes, with Margaery (Natalie Dormer) feeling the brunt of her wrath. Speaking of, who was that man we saw her embracing? Definitely not her child-husband, Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman), whose wedding we saw a glimpse of as well.
3. Sansa and Littlefinger are still working together
Sansa (Sophie Turner) was also heavily featured in the trailer, with Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) being as creepy as always. Her storyline this season is as much of a mystery to book readers as it is to every other viewer, so I’m really excited to see where they take her. We got a quick shot of the warriors of the Vale, which is a strong sign Sansa and Littlefinger are plotting something. I’d love to see a storyline where Sansa makes a claim for the North, though her marriage to Tyrion may get in the way of that.
4. Battle sequences aplenty
There was plenty of action in the trailer as well, including what looks like another battle between the Night’s Watch and the Wildlings. Dany’s Unsullied were also shown fighting what is most likely the Sons of Harpy. The giant Harpy statue on top of the great pyramid in Meereen being destroyed could be an indicator of that. Plus we had our first glimpse of the Sand Snakes in Dorne, accompanied by a grieving Ellaria Sand. RIP Oberyn.
5. Extra goodies for book fans
There were also a few great shots that fans of the books will recognize, including Arya (Maisie Williams) standing outside of the House of Black and White and the scene at Daznak’s Pit, which could become the biggest OMG moment of the season.
