The upcoming CTV murder mystery series Cardinal has found its leads. The network, alongside producers Sienna Films and Entertainment One (eOne), announced Monday that Golden Globe nominee Billy Campbell (The Killing) will star as detective John Cardinal, with multiple Genie Award-winning actress Karine Vanasse cast as his partner, Lise Delorme. The six-part series is based off of the bestselling crime novels written by Ontario native and award-winning author Giles Blunt, and begins with the discovery of Katie Pine, a missing 13-year-old whose body is discovered in the shaft-head of an abandoned mine.
Detective Cardinal is described as intelligent, reflective and dogged, and hails from the northern city of Algonquin Bay and is haunted be a wrong he committed years ago. Vanasse (Revenge) plays his shrewd, tough, imaginative and gifted investigator partner from the town’s French Canadian community. “It is an honour to have Billy Campbell and Karine Vanasse on board Cardinal,” said Corrie Coe, Senior Vice-President, Independent Production, Bell Media. “These two enormously talented actors, with their wide range of film and television experience, are perfectly suited to bring these rich, complex characters to life.”
Campell is well known for starring as Darren Richmond on AMC’s hit series The Killing, as well as Rick Sammler on the beloved ABC drama Once and Again for which he received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Dramatic Series and won a People’s Choice Award for Favourite Male Performer in a New Television Series for his performance. He also starred in The 4400 and notable films such as The Rocketeer, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and Enough. Karine Vanasse is an award-winning Canadian actress with recent television credits including ABC’s Pan Am and Revenge. Her starring role in the 2009 Canadian film Polytechnique earned her a Genie Award for Best Female Performance.
Production is set to begin on the series in February 2016.
