Life seems to be going pretty well for Officer Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) so far this season on Chicago PD. She’s happily engaged to fellow cop and Intelligence Officer Adam Ruzek (Patrick John Flueger), and has a strong working relationship with her partner Officer Sean Roman (Brian Geraghty). Season 3 has seen her happy to be out patrolling the streets, a far cry from her original plan of joining Intelligence. In fact, getting on the Intelligence Unit is “something she’s not thinking of right now,” said Squerciati on a conference call with reporters Monday. “I’m not saying that’s not in the cards, but I really do think it’s something that’s taken a backseat,” the actress said before adding that “she’s very happy where she is.”
Not only is Burgess happy in her work life, but her personal life seems to be going along great as well now that she and Ruzek are engaged. However, Squerciati says not to expect wedding bells for the two any time soon this season. “We’re filming Episode 9 and so far there has been no wedding bells or hint of wedding bells,” she told us. So despite the fact Squerciati’s fans may think she has some inside knowledge of a Burzek wedding, she swears that she doesn’t. “I think they [the fans] think like I know, but I don’t know. The writers do not trust me with that secret. So hopefully this season, but I literally have no idea,” she said.
Could their trip down the aisle be delayed by some possible tension from the fact that two cops working together may not make such a successful relationship? “So far Ruzek has been a little protective when he sees me, which is not helpful unfortunately, and I think the more we interact as cops, the more that will rear its ugly head,” Squerciati predicted. Such complications may in fact arise as early as Wednesday’s episode, “Debts of the Past,” which will see Burgess learn some unsettling news about Ruzek’s past.
Burgess’ partner on the job, Roman, may also end up causing problems for her and Ruzek’s relationship on Wednesday night. “Roman inserts himself into a situation–I think the relationship between Roman and Burgess is very interesting and how it affects, not in a jealousy way, but how it affects her relationship with Ruzek, you’ll see very strongly in this coming episode,” the actress previewed.
Roman and Burgess’ partnership will face pressure from other areas as well as Season 3 goes on. Squerciati singled out Episode 309, which she is currently filming, as a big episode for Burgess and Roman. In that episode, “Burgess’ loyalty to Roman really gets tested. Roman is coloring outside the lines a little, which is not something Burgess is completely comfortable doing,” she said. Squerciati went on to tell us that “it’s the classic story of ‘How far do you go for your friends? Do you do exactly what you want or do you have to blur the lines a little because you have to help a friend?’ We’ll see. It’s really exciting.” She also added that “it’s a crazy story in which Roman gets into a lot, a lot of trouble.”
