One of the most important arcs during Chasing Life’s first season has been teenager Brenna’s unlabeled sexuality as she explored a relationship with fellow classmate Greer. When Brenna met Greer, a lesbian, tennis player who later became her girlfriend, Brenna became one of television’s most unique representations of LGBT teenagers this season, refusing to classify her sexuality or wear labels in favour of one team or the other.
“That has really been my favourite part about playing Brenna. It’s never really addressed and I think that’s so cool to just talk about it how it is,” Brenna’s portrayer, actress Haley Ramm tells The TV Junkies. In fact, Chasing Life has routinely made a point of Brenna not identifying herself, something that makes Ramm love her character even more. “I think the fact that she doesn’t feel the need to make excuses for herself was one of the things I love the most. I think it’s so cool that she’s only in high school and knows herself so well already and stays true to herself,” the actress says.
While Brenna may not identify with a team, she has remained routinely drawn into Greer’s (Gracie Dzienny) orbit, especially as Greer has faced down some personal demons involving prescription drugs. Brenna recently made the very mature decision to remain just friends with Greer, but it’s something that may not last very long. “I just think if you’re a teenager and you have feelings for someone you can only hold back so much. It’s not going to be too much longer before something happens.”
That’s music to the ears of all the “Grenna” shippers out there worried about the two reconciling, something Ramm promises is “bound to happen.” Ramm warns that it just may not all be the smooth sailing fans are hoping for as “they are 16 or 17 and they can only get away with so much.” It seems to us that the bubble Brenna and Greer have been operating in, with both girls’ parents blissfully unaware that they’ve been hanging out together more, won’t last much longer before at least Brenna’s family starts to get concerned. “I don’t really blame Brenna’s family for being concerned at what we’ve seen from Greer’s family in the past,” concedes Ramm.
Her relationship with Greer might not be her family’s only cause for worry though. “Sara will try to get Brenna to take school more seriously. College is right around the corner and there’s no signs of Brenna buckling down any time soon,” previews Ramm. Of course, with Brenna being Brenna, she’ll face this latest obstacle in her own unique way. Ramm says that “Brenna’s going to have to prove that she’s living up to her potential but she’ll do it in a ‘Brenna’ way where she’s just going to do it her way.”

Chasing Life airs on Mondays at 9 p.m. ET on ABC Family and ABC Spark.
