We can’t see into the future, but we do know the premiere of CLAIREvoyant is on the horizon and we are already counting down the days til it arrives from inner space. The Shaftesbury produced series will premiere Wednesday, May 16 at 7 p.m. ET on KindaTV and was created by Annie Briggs and Natasha Negovanlis. The pair star as best friends Claire (Negovanlis) and Ruby (Briggs) who pretend to be fortune tellers online so they can avoid eviction, but things get really weird when Claire turns out to actually have real psychic abilities.
This isn’t the first time Briggs and Negovanlis have worked together, as both co-starred on the hugely popular series Carmilla, as well as the Carmilla movie. The comedy series also stars theater actress Sabryn Rock, Jsin Sasha (Designated Survivor, The Strain) and Theresa Tova (Regenesis, ENG). The latest trailer for CLAIREvoyant just dropped, which you can check out below, and it gave a better idea of what to expect from the series. As it turns out, we’re now more excited than ever and if you keep reading you’ll see exactly why that is.
A U-turn for Natasha Negovanlis
Thanks to her starring role as as vampire Carmilla Karnstein on Carmilla, Negovanlis has a huge and loyal fan base that’s no doubt already marking their calendars for CLAIREvoyant’s premiere. However, Claire is a huge shift for the 2017 Canadian Screen Awards Fan Choice winner from the smooth, sultry vampire audiences are used to seeing her play. In fact, the adorably dorky psychic seems about as far away from Carmila as you could get, but if the trailer is any indication, it’s a challenge Negovanlis has taken on with unending enthusiasm. While we love Carmilla, we have to say that we cannot wait to see these new shades to Negovanlis and have a feeling that in the end, the actresses innate charm will once again win us over and have us swooning.
Over the top Annie Briggs
While Negovanlis’ Claire seems to be more reserved and reluctant about the online psychic scam, Briggs’ Ruby looks to be completely over the top whacky and we are here for it! Like Negovanlis, the restless wild-child also seems to be a far cry from Briggs’ role on Carmila where she played Perry, a character that was always in control and seemed much more mature than her classmates. Briggs seems to be having all kinds of fun as Ruby and we have no doubt that will translate to viewers as well.
Faking your way as online psychics seems a bit silly and a lot of work to make a few bucks, but that ridiculousness is exactly one of the reasons we find ourselves drawn in by CLAIREvoyant. From over the top wigs to wacky costumes, the “Seer Sisters” come off as delightfully tacky and while their readings may not be accurate, we can’t wait to see entertainment comes out of them.
CLAIREvoyant is a series the centers around best friends Ruby and Claire and frankly, we just don’t get enough female friendships on screen these days. While many series still want us to believe women are backstabbing “frenemies” at best, it’s already evident that’s not the case on CLAIREvoyant. Ruby and Claire truly love one another, are here for each other and willing to support each other through crazy hair-brained schemes. How could we not love and support a relationship like that?
Not only was CLAIREvoyant co-created by an openly queer woman, but Negovanlis’ Claire is also queer. Claire has a big crush on Nico (Rock) and we’ll get to see her navigate that relationship as she comes to terms with her new psychic abilities. In a time when on screen representation is more important than ever, it’s great to see series like CLAIREvoyant bringing positive representation to the forefront.
While roles for female characters on screen seem to be improving and tired tropes are starting to fall by the wayside, we still always want more female-centric shows with something to say! The CLAIREvoyant Indiegogo campaign boasted that every female character would be “unabashedly strong in her own unique way,” and the result is a feminist comedy we can’t help but get behind. The characters on CLAIREvoyant are sex positive, body positive and unabashedly themselves, still an all too uncommon thing to see on screen, and another reason that has us ready and waiting to head into inner space!
