When Rosemary LeVeaux (Pascale Hutton) first burst onto the scene of When Calls The Heart we have to admit that we weren’t fans. OK, it’s safe to say that we kind of hated her. She was mean to Elizabeth (Erin Krakow), she was trying to come between Jack (Daniel Lissing) and Elizabeth, and quite frankly everything she did drove us nuts. But as the seasons went on, and as she realized that things were in fact over between her and Jack, she slowly grew into one of our favorite characters. We love her over the top personality, her need to always be the center of attention and we even love her backhanded compliments to Elizabeth. Her ability to get a rise out of Elizabeth is impeccable and it never fails to make us laugh.
Rosemary is brilliantly played by Canada’s own Pascale Hutton. Canadian viewers will likely recognize her from CBC’s Arctic Air where she played renegade bush pilot Krista Ivarson. Hutton joined the cast of When Calls The Heart towards the end of its first season and has been stirring up trouble ever since. The TV Junkies were lucky enough to sit down with her at December’s Hearties Family Reunion in Vancouver. Read on the see what she has to say about Rosemary and Lee’s relationship, the possibility of kids in their future and what’s to come in Season 4.
The TV Junkies: Lee (Kavan Smith) and Rosemary make quite the team. They really couldn’t be any more different. Why do you think it is that they work out so well together? It takes a pretty special guy to embrace everything that is Rosemary. Rosemary really is a whole lot of person.
Pascale Hutton: She is a whooooole lot of person and I think Lee is a big personality in his own way. He wanted somebody who brought big joy and big drama and big emotions into his world. I think that he really enjoys that. And yet, he’s not going to just be a pushover and that’s why I think it works. He enjoys all of Rosemary’s drama and melodrama and yet he’s not overtaken by it. He’s a strong enough man that he can enjoy it but not be pushed over by it. Rosemary can fly off into a dimension of performance where she can get away from her truth and Lee really grounds her. He makes sure that she stays truthful and honest.
TTVJ: You guys have great chemistry on screen.
PH: And we really make each other laugh. Truthfully, when the two of us are working together we just laugh all the time. And then they start shooting and we’re still laughing and they stop shooting and we’re still laughing.
TTVJ: Usually, when you marry a couple on a show the spice in their relationship tends to fizzle out a bit, or at least the viewers worry that it might. In watching the Christmas movie that really doesn’t look like it’s going to happen between Lee and Rosemary.
PH: No, it’s not. We go through quite a few growing pains as newlyweds, and it is funny to see that kind of work itself out or not work itself out as we struggle to find out what these new roles are.
TTVJ: Rosemary mentioned last season that she wasn’t sure about having kids. Is this topic going to come up again this season? Do you think that she might reconsider?
PH: I know but then I kind of came around to the idea at the end of Season 3. The topic quite honestly doesn’t come up in Season 4. I think both Rosemary and Lee just have their hands filled with just figuring out how to be husband and wife, let alone a mom and a dad. We’ll see, I don’t know how that’s going to play into subsequent seasons, we’ll see.
TTVJ: But she’s so great with the school kids in Hope Valley.
PH: She is so great with the school kids, and I think if they were to have a child and she could see the kid as being a part of her creative outburst and part of her projects rather than a job, she would come around to the idea and she would probably be the best mom in the world.
TTVJ: What else can you tell me about what is coming up this season?
PH: This season honestly is full of so many twists and turns that I really don’t want to say anything. There are going to be some really shocking moments in this season and I don’t know how the fans are going to react. I think the fans will be really shocked to see what we have for them this season.
TTVJ: We’ve seen online some of the new characters warning about their character’s coming in and the Hearties aren’t going to like them. Should they be worried?
PH: You know you need to have some conflict right? So you need some characters that are less likable to create that conflict. But we’ll see, I’m really excited to hear how the Hearties react to it all.
Do you love Rosemary as much as we do now? Are you looking forward to watching her and Lee figure out married life? Do you hope we will see kids in their future? Sound off in the comments section below.
