Are you watching the rowdy bunch of misfits that is DC’s Legends of Tomorrow? Maybe you recently caught the four-way DCTV crossover on the CW and found yourself curious to know more about the Legends? If you’re not already watching don’t worry. There’s no shame to be found here. Having only recently gotten into the show myself, I can tell you that now is the perfect time to hop on board the Waverider and dive head first into the CW superhero show. In a time when the everyday world can be very dark, Legends is by far the lightest and most fun of all the DC shows, never taking itself too seriously. In short, it’s some of the finest escapist fun around right now.
While I find myself quite enjoying several of the Legends on the team (I am looking unexpectedly at you Mick Rory (Dominic Purcell)!), as well as the fact that women seem to always rule here, there’s one reason above all that I’d recommend you watch this show. That reason is Sara Lance (Caity Lotz). Yes, Laurel Lance’s younger sister from Arrow and the former member of the League of Assassins has really found her footing on Legends, and I dare say that it’d now be harder to find a character in the CW’s DC universe that has come farther or grown more than she has.
For those that may not recall, Sara was presumed dead on Arrow when the boat she was on with ex-lover Oliver Queen went down. She came back and was revealed to be a member of the League, later leaving them but returning to Starling City as the vigilante hero the Canary. She then left Arrow to join Rip Hunter’s team on Legends of Tomorrow, now known as White Canary, and has become the team’s leader full stop in Season 3. We love nothing more here at The TV Junkies than a badass female heroine, and we’ve come to realize that Sara Lance is one of the absolute best around. So if you’re on the fence and looking for a new show to watch or another great character to love, check out below why Sara Lance fits the bill.
Oh Captain my Captain
There’s no doubt in anyone’s mind that Sara Lance is Captain of the Waverider, the timeship used as a mobile base of operations by the Legends team. Not only has Sara fully embraced that role, but she wields her authority with ease. That means that the entire Legends crew (yes, even all those guys!) knows she’s in charge and defers to her leadership. Sara makes the tough decisions so others don’t have to, and she does everything in her power to ensure that her team completes every mission safely.
Martin Stein: “Ms. Lance speaks for all of us. I have watched her become the beating heart and steady hand of this team. She is the proper person to lead us. If she says that we are going to rescue our people, that is what we are going to do.”
Her crazy good fighting skills
Sara may not have any special powers like some of the other Legends, but she can fight with the best of them! If you like your superheroes to come in the shape of super badass ladies then you’re going to love Sara Lance. She often uses whatever weapon may be lying around at her disposal as she puts those years of League of Assassins fighting skills to excellent use. Regardless of powers, if you’re headed into a battle of any kind, you’re going to want Sara Lance on your team.
She never backs down
Not only is Sara good to have on your team for her fighting skills, but she also never backs down from a fight, no matter the odds. This is especially true if one of her crew is in danger, and as Captain, Sara makes the tough calls no matter the opponent, time or place in history. You better look out if you find yourself on the opposing side!
She has real heart
Sara may be a total badass and project a very tough exterior, but she’s also got a gooey center underneath it all. Sara has faced a lot of issues with her family and had a rough history, but it hasn’t stopped her from still seeing good in others. She deeply cares for the other Legends on her team, and as evident in the recent crossover, once you’re on her team she’s always going to look out for you. Sara is fiercely loyal and when she loves, she loves hard. She’s had some losses along the way, but she hasn’t let them keep her down for long and she realizes that loving and caring aren’t weakness, but powerful weapons to have in her back pocket.
She’s a great example of positive representation
Sara Lance is a bisexual woman being positively portrayed and that’s something that still, in 2017, we don’t see enough of on television. Sara’s sexuality is never “a thing” and she’s been shown to be linked romantically with both men and women. Legends never shows Sara as promiscuous or “indecisive” as many bisexuals on TV are portrayed, but instead Sara’s interactions are always in a positive and respectful light. It’s clear that Lotz and Legends have taken great care with the character and made it a priority to prove that Sara loves a person, no matter their gender, simply for who they are.
She’s got mad game
All that doesn’t mean that Sara is a slouch in the romance department. In fact, she’s got a confidence and swagger about her that is very sexy and very hard to resist. From Oliver Queen and Leonard Snart to Guinevere in King Arthur’s court, there’s not many that are immune and able to resist the charms of Sara Lance. Even Supergirl’s Alex Danvers fell for Sara in the latest DC crossover, and while she may have been a touch embarrassed, Sara made sure she wouldn’t forget the fun they had together.
But she’s ready for a real romance
While we’re still holding out hope, because there’s been no official confirmation, for the return one day of Sara’s true Arrow love Nyssa (Katrina Law), Sara has moved on with others in her absence. However, it’s clear Sara still believes in love and even though there have been flings throughout Legends’ three seasons, Sara also worked very hard to get her soul back and figure things out professionally. She’s feeling more centered and sure of her place on the team, and if the Season 3 midseason finale is any indication, Sara has some serious sparks flying with Agent Ava Sharpe (Jes Macallan). Could the “Avalance” ship be ready to set sail? It’d take quite the woman to be worthy of Sara Lance, but count us amongst this ‘ships’ fans because the only thing better than one badass lady is two!
Caity Lotz’s performance
One of the biggest reasons that Sara Lance has come as far as she has from her Arrow days, and made such huge strides, is Lotz. Since Lotz first embodied Sara back on Arrow until her present Legends stint, it’s clear that Lotz has grown right along with her and has really settled into the character. Lotz imbues Sara with strength, heart, charisma and a sense of humor that makes her one of the most enjoyable and easy to root for characters on TV. It’s also clear from many behind the scenes posts, that Lotz herself may be just as big of a badass and real life superhero as Sara Lance.
This may be another skill that needs to be attributed to Lotz herself, but no one smirks better than Sara Lance. I mean who out there would protest getting more of the unabashed and unashamed smirking power of Sara Lance? For proof of this, look no further than the following two examples that happened in consecutive episodes. When it comes to smirking, all awards to Sara Lance!
