Now that we’re a little more familiar with the show’s main players, this episode of Marvel’s Runaways began to unlock certain mysteries about our heroes. Of course, with every revelation another four new questions are thrown our way. For example, we knew about Karolina’s powers from the frat party incident, but now we’ve got other glowing folks? What?!? Chase has proven himself smarter than your typical jock, but why would daddy dearest take an interest in his son’s Fistigon prototype now? What’s he after? Did Amy reallykill herself? I am loving this show, guys! OK, let’s go over some of the installment’s top moments…
1. Karolina’s Powers
Both Karolina and Molly suffer from exhaustion after using their powers, but are they “mutants?” We don’t really know much about the changes some of the teens are going through, but with The Gifted currently airing on FOX, it’s doubtful this show is tackling mutant abilities as well. Besides, Marvel doesn’t have the rights to the “mutant” world. That said, the revelation that Karolina’s mother, Leslie, glows as well means the condition is hereditary. As I mentioned in my review, not being familiar with the material makes the guesswork all the more fun.
2. Does the Flaky White Guy Glow Too?
When Leslie stripped and jumped into bed with the creepy white guy, they both appeared to glow in their nether regions. That made for some bizarre sexy-time, no? For a while, I found myself thinking the mystery man was Leslie’s father, but this episode proved that theory incorrect. Are the writers hinting that crusty is Karolina’s dad? Ewwww! Clearly, the goal of the sacrifices is to rejuvenate the near-death man. If that’s the case, why doesn’t Leslie begin to flake as well? See what I mean about even more questions?
3. Gert Controls Old Lace
Though it seemed each teen would develop their own powers, Gert’s telepathic link to the velociraptor appears to be her thing. I like the fact that they’re putting a spin on the teens’ superpowers. Tina’s got the staff. Chase has his Fistigons. Sure we learned Gert can control Old Lace, (she hasn’t named the dino yet but I’ve read that’s its name), but the how remains a mystery. Is it because Old Lace grew up listening to Gert singing? Did her wacky parents include something in the dino’s genetic makeup that links the two? They can’t be as evil as the others, right? I’m curious to learn more.
4. The Truth About Amy’s Death
The death of Niko’s sister, Amy, was the jumping off point as far as the mysteries of the show. I’m a fan of using flashbacks to flesh out characters and help fill in the blanks, so the opening was a thrill for me. However, even someone unfamiliar with the world of Marvel’s Runaways knows something fishy is going on. All signs point to malevolent organization, The PRIDE, having sacrificed Amy in one of their rituals. Yet her name did not appear on the list of runaway sacrifices. What’s going on? Do you have any theories?
5. Alex is Abducted
The timing of Alex’s abduction made me think that Leslie’s church was responsible. After all, they can’t have information about PRIDE’s sacrifices leaking, right? Still, you’ve got to wonder why they didn’t nab Nico as well? If they’re responsible for killing Amy, isn’t it possible they might sacrifice another of their children? Especially after the failure with Destiny. These parents are monsters, aren’t they? Also, Alex’s dad was fairly nasty to his old pal Darius. Could this be retribution? Perhaps the thug figures Geoffrey Wilder will pay any ransom as long as his son is returned home safely. I have no doubt this will all become clear in the next episode.
