Bones gets a little kinky

Tuck the little ones in tight and ensure innocent ears aren’t listening because Bones just got kinky! OK so it wasn’t exactly 50 Shades of Grey, (if we’re being honest it was really only about two shades), but for a Bones episode, things certainly felt scandalous. Raise your hand if you were blushing through Booth and Brennan’s discussion about S&M.

Before we all get hot and bothered, lets turn our attention to the rest of the episode. Everyone attempted to get back to normal as the show returned to the standard case of the week investigation. Meanwhile, Booth was busying himself practicing the art of avoidance. He’s sleepless and did not want to deal with Sweets’ death, along with losing faith in his beliefs.

It was great to see Bones not let him off the hook, by calling him out on his stall tactics time and again. Let’s be honest, Temperence Brennan is not one to hold back words for fear of hurting someone’s feelings. The lady tells it like it is. She’s also not going to change for her husband, and luckily for him, that is a very good thing.

When Booth was wrongly convicted and sent to jail, along with Sweets’ death, he lost faith in his beliefs. He’s always been a man of faith, and while he may think believing in family is enough, Brennan is right, he needs to expand his world. At least he still has faith in Brennan, the one person he feels has never let him down. This was precisely why she was the one who needed to pull him out of this, something the writers and producers of Bones also knew and recognized. That’s exactly why she reminded him throughout the episode, that he needs to trust again. By the end of the hour, he had already made significant strides getting back to the Booth we know and love.

Those strides came in the form of striking up a partnership with Special Agent Aubrey, something Booth initially resisted. Maybe Booth was like many fans, seeing Aubrey trying to fill the void left by Sweets. He doesn’t need Sweets 2.0. However, Aubrey was right, he wasn’t at fault for Sweets’ death, and Booth (and fans) can’t blame him for it. Personally, I think this is a great chance for Booth to mentor a younger agent. He’s never had that kind of relationship on the show due to his unique partnership with Bones. Besides, Booth has always had a quirky side to him (hello ‘Cocky’ belt buckle and funky socks), and this is a trait Aubrey seems to share.

I do wish when Aubrey finally stood up to Booth that he had done so without throwing Sweets in his face. I wish that instead, Booth would’ve come to the realization on his own, that Sweets trusted Aubrey, so he should therefore trust him. Nevertheless, I remained unswayed in my support for this new partnership. By the end of the episode Booth seemed to agree, and he accepted Aubrey into a working partnership.

If I did have any pause for concern, it would be that I do not want this to be the end of Booth and Brennan working together out in the field and in the interrogation room. Some of the best Bones moments come from those scenes. I’m sure the writers and producers know this as well. Who knows, maybe I’m just feeling a tad insecure like Brennan?

Regardless, after two emotionally taxing weeks of Bones dealing with Sweets’ death, this week felt like a breath of fresh air as things returned to normal. There is now a light at the end of the tunnel for Booth, and I have no doubt our boy will pull through with flying colors, especially when he’s got Brennan right there beside him to keep him in check.

Pausing to examine the evidence:

  • I’ve got to agree with Booth. In terms of the gross corpses we’ve seen in the past, that dead body only warranted a mediocre “six” rating.
  • According to Booth, “S&M is a not a peanut butter cup. It’s not two great tastes whipped together.” I’m inclined to believe the man because really, what’s better than a Reese’s?
  • “I know a good man when I see one. I picked you didn’t I?” – Awwww Brennan! She’s right, no one is better than our boy Booth!
