When Freeform announced that they were picking up a new series from the incredibly talented writer/producer Sarah Watson, I won’t sugarcoat the fact that I was bursting with excitement. Then, I read the premise and actually jumped into the air, fists thrusting high. We need this show. We need this show now more than ever.

The Bold Type focuses on three young women, Kat, Sutton, and Jane, all three of who work at Scarlet, a feminist, progressive, and rad as hell magazine! They all work in different departments (social media, writing articles, assistant, etc.) but they all share the common goal of being successful, being happy, and supporting each other in the process!

These girls aren’t going to smile because you tell them to. They’re going to smile because they want to, as they do what they want, but with compassion and a fighting energy to thrive and stay afloat. They are in control of their own destinies and they aren’t even old enough to rent a car. They are powerful, smart, snarky, and fiercely loyal. They look after each other while never selling themselves short in the process. They’re modern day role models and they are the women that will change the world, and we’re so grateful that we get to cheer them on. So without further ado, here are The TV Junkies’ Top 8 moments from The Bold Type’s two-hour premiere!

Meeting Our Girls

These girls do not belittle each other or talk behind each other’s backs, they support each other and push each other to aim higher. When we meet Jane, Kat, and Sutton they are toasting their best friend getting a promotion. Sutton and Kat aren’t mad that the attention isn’t on them, nor are they plotting a devious plan that would benefit themselves. They are proud to support their friend’s accomplishment and that’s pretty badass and rare to see on network television.

Their Fearless (and Not Terrible) Leader, Jacqueline

I won’t lie, I was nervous about Jacqueline. I was so excited about this series right from the start, and then I heard there would be a boss, and I was so terrified that they were going to go in the Devil Wears Prada direction. I have never been so happy to be wrong before! Jacqueline is encouraging, uplifting, and she pushes the girls in the right and necessary ways. She is hard on them but only because she wants them to be better, to persevere, to persist and to make waves. I am so thrilled that I was dead wrong about Jacqueline! We need more women like her on our TV screens!

Adena’s Art/Her Friendship With Kat

The whole storyline involving Adeena and Kat was beautifully done. Kat convincing Adena to do a profile the profile in Scarlet was such a great introduction to not only who Kat is as a person, but also a great look into how strong Adena truly is. I love that Kat was seriously moved by Adena’s art and the message behind it!

It’s All Happening For Jane

Raise your hand high if you cried during Jacqueline’s “Scarlet was like her big sister…” speech at the Scarlet 60 gala because I sure as hell did! That moment seemed like everything Jane had worked so hard for, for all of those years had finally paid off. To have the woman, who she respects so much, compliment her (OK, so it was anonymously, but it still counts) in front of a room full of important people must have meant everything to her. It was a magical scene to watch and something that was perfectly placed into the pilot.

Sutton Takes Charge

The thing I love most about Sutton is that she never apologizes for the way she is or what she does. Sure, we haven’t known her that long, but it’s pretty clear to see she has a strong head on her shoulders. She does what she wants and what she thinks is best for her. Her dating Richard is on her own terms, and she isn’t giving into the typical “boss/employee” relationship we are so often used to seeing. He also isn’t her priority or main storyline. Her career comes first and I think that’s the best thing about her. She isn’t pining after him, she cares for him deeply, but his affection isn’t the only thing on her mind.

Kat is Catching the Feels

Remember when I said I love Kat and Adena’s friendship? Well, I lied! I want them to date, like, right now! Though, Kat was a bit weary at admitting she was jealous of the girl that was with Adena at her art show, it was clear to see and something that she couldn’t even hide from her friends. Not to mention she had a sex dream about her! Also, my favorite line of the episode “O Hell No” may go to Sutton for “Wow, we’re gonna have to unpack this.” Have I mentioned how much I love their friendship? Anyways, I’m rooting for them! Here’s hoping Kadena (can this be their ship name?) becomes a thing!

Sutton and Alex

This friendship is proving to be one of my favorite things on The Bold Type! OK, so they haven’t shared a ton of screen time but that doesn’t mean I love them any less! Alex and Sutton have this great office friendship that’s turning into a really positive presence in each of their lives and I am so excited to see where it goes. His little pep talks to her throughout the first two episodes have been crazy adorable!

Ryan and Jane

Ryan is brooding extremely hard the first time we meet him and he’s got that whole “bad boy” thing down, but after we got the chance to see him a little more in “O Hell No,” he’s pretty great! I like him with Jane (if that turns into a thing) because he seems to break her out of her comfort zone and he challenges her and respects her. In my opinion, Jane should just be with Ryan and never worry about that weird non-social media-having ex of hers! Plus, this one is much cuter!

P.S. Rob Lowry SLAYED with his music choices for the pilot. Seriously, this soundtrack is incredible!
